I am curious does anyone off the top of there head know which caliber offered by NEF yeilds the highest pressures? And what is it in psi? thanks Tanoose

Thanks Quick, i wonder what the nef receivers are built to withstand there are alot of calibers out there that they dont chamber and i beleive alot of powerful big bores dont exceed the 65,000 psi am i correct ?Is they a manual or website that lists all the current calibers and there pressures? The H&R web site shows all the calibers, the accessory barrel page is the best in a list and the levergun link in my other post has all the pressures.

tanoose, you don't say what you want to do, but it is not just a question of chamber pressure, it is a question of head diameter as well. The larger the head diameter the greater the thrust on the breech. The 416 Rigby, although it only operates at a modest 40,000 psi or so, at 65,000 psi it would generate significantly more pressure on the case head than the 270. For practical purposes the 45-70 will do everything one would want to do in a Handi frame.

JPH I was just thinking about how many calibers are out there that are safe to use in tyhe NEF single shot that are not chambered for it. I was wondering if the handi rifle design could handle cartridges like the .375H&H , 416, 's or 458's. As far as the .45/70 goes i have alot of years under my belt with this caliber and will be ordering a handi within the next two weeks.My opinion on the 45/70 is that it is one of the best close range big game calibers of all time. Although my experience is limited to whitail deer.

You could run the 375H&H case at 40,000 in the Handi but no more. NEF chambers the 450 Marlin which is essentially the 2" American, but the ammunition is only making 40,000 PSI. Pushing it harder will no doubt streach the frame as has been reported by one fellow who did a rechamber to 300 Win Mag.

40,000 PSI loads in the 375 case would be nothing to sneer at, 300 grain bullets at 2200 fps or so, basically starting loads for the 375 but that is 45-70 performance. Problem is that the same performance could be had rechambering a 38-55 barrel to 375-06, but then you would have to address the .379 or so barrel people report the 38-55 having rather than a 375 barrel, unless you were talking a rebore.

The best way out would be to invest in an Encore. It is chambered in the 375 H&H and will handle anything that is based on that case. As well, it would be no big deal to get SSK to make a barrel for it, and I think you would end up with a better gun for the task in the end.
