MOSSBERG VS REM

Anyone have any experience with the moss ultimag or remington super mag 12 gauge. Wanting new gun for duck, geese but that can also be used for dove and quail. Any suggestions on chokes?  Both come factory with modified choke.

Hey Gator1,

You present a difficult question.  The Mossberg ultimag has a back bored barrel that has muzzle dimensions simmilar to a 10 ga.  This is supposed to make it pattern better for geese, but I don't know from personnal experience yet if that is true or not.  I personnally am a big fan of the 870.  I have a 20 ga. mag. that I like very much.  They seem to me to be superb in value and quality.  I don't have much use for fancy guns, (actually, I can't afford them :cry: ).  I do know from personnal experience that the US Navy trusts Mossberg for use on their nuclear submarines.  That is saying something if you ask me.  My choice would be the Rem, but I think the Moss would also be a goo choice.  Not much help, I know, but that is my $.02 worth.

I got both, the Mossberg 835 I've had for about 9 yrs. The Remington alot less. In comparison I'd rather have the Remington. The bolt and slide feel smoother, but I think the top safety is of the Mossberg is a better choice, especially with gloves on. The bolt on the mossberg feels like it has a locking lug that requires the slide to be pushed forward slightly to be released before the slide can be "racked" back to eject the spent hull, this takes a split second to accomplish but interrupts the shooting cycle. The Remington costs a little more than the Mossberg but overall I think is a better gun. Right now the Mossberg has a 24" slug barrel on it and is being used primarily as a deer gun on WMA's while the Remington is being used for waterfowl and turkey. I used the Mossberg for years as an all purpose gun. The modified choke is one of the most all purpose chokes, especially with steel shot and no bird hunter would be complete without an Imp. Cyl. The Mossberg came with five chokes. I wound up selling most of them to a buddy. The Remington with three. Just my .02 for what it's worth.

      I have been using the Mossberg for close to 40 years I guess and trying to use the 870 for nearly as long. For me the Mossberg is the gun  use all the time. My old 835 would knock your backside in the dirt with    3 1/2's, but it sure killed bunches of ducks and geese. The new ported version is a sweetheart next to the first 835's. The 500 has been my all round shotgun for most of my 40+ years of hunting. I'll be buying the new set in a month or two. Now the secret...I could set the barrel of an 870 on my foot and still miss. Two years ago during a dove hunt I was 11 for 15 with my ole 500. switched to my buddies 870 a box later 0 birds. Back to the 500 4 shots and I had my limit. I love the way the 870 feels but at 6'5" it just doesn't fit me. That said I'm going to try again with the 20 ga 870, love the way it handles. Hard headed I guess. My advice to you is buy the gun that fits you the best. Im my humble opinion you can't go wrong with either.

Ditto on what Mckinley said. Go with what feels right.  I normally just twist in the mod choke and leave it in, with the exception of turkeys where I want a full choke, mod seems to work the best for most of what I do.

Any particular reason for the supermag? I have the Mossberg and Rem in 12 gauge 3" and never felt undergunned even for honkers. Big attraction for me is the 3" factory ammo is less pricey than 3 1/2" and I can set my reloader for 3". If a supermag is what you like though, by all means go for it.

I did't get either instead after mounting the 835, Nova, 870 and the Stoeger 2000 Auto I bought the 2000 in Max 4 camo yesterday. It fit me better than the other by a bunch. Like I said get what fits ya.  :grin: [/i]
