Chronographed the 44 Handi today
« on: February 04, 2005, 01:01:40 PM »
Not as nice a day today but I went out to the range ans chronograped the 44 Mag loads that I talked about yesterday. 200 grain Hornady XTP 11.3 grains of Unique. These are prety mild loads compared to the velcity from the Hornady manual for the 44 mag rifle. It is however  towards the top of the unique velocity listed. Thses averaged 1543 fps. from the handi. The top load in the book for the rifle is 1600 fps. If I want to increase the velocity on these 200 grainers I need to go to H110 or 296. These powders should bring loads in the 22 inch barrel to a bit over 2000 fps.

I also chronographed some factory loaded Winchester Supreme with the 250 grain PARTITION GOLD Noslers. These averaged 1622 FPS. Very consistant with only 7 fps extreme spread for four shots.

The 299 grain XTP load would be fine for close range because they are well up in velocity if fired from a revolver length barrel.
shot placement is everything.

James B -

What book is that Unique load coming out of?

Guess I need to get a new Hornady book - mine has quite a bit more weight of Unique as max for pistol loads - it does not even include Unique for rifle loads.

I've been using Blue Dot with that bullet for several years out of a 629 - very little muzzle flash even with a 6" barrel - and very controlable.  I hope it will shoot good when i get a Handi- barrel for .44

That load came from the pistol section of the speer Manual. I originally loaded them for a pistol. The new Hornady does not list Unique for the rifle either. 8 grains of Unique with a cast 240 grain makes a very fun load for practiceand small Game.
shot placement is everything.

I'm very familar with the 8.0 Unique/240 gr cast load from a pistol.

Is there much or any unburned powder left after lightening it off from the longer handi barrel? - I'd think not.

My best loads for 44mag
« Reply #8 on: February 04, 2005, 06:03:53 PM »
I haven't loaded any 44mag ammo for several years, but I had real good results using IMR 4227 powder.  My best load was 24 grains of IMR4227 and a Remington 240 grain semi-jacketed HP.  Very effective on the Blacktails we have around here.  this was out of a 10-1/2" super blackhawk.

I've found H110 to be very accurate in my 44. I like 1680 too, it is accurate as well, but does not make the velocity H110 does. I suspect Blue Dot, 4227, and 2400 will do best with the 200 grainer for full velocity. I have always liked Unique, but in the 44 it will reach max pressure before it reaches max velocity, but it does shoot accurately.

Blue Dot was a top velocity powder out of my 6" 629 Classic with the 200 grain bullets but I seem to remember horrific muzzle flash. I shot a doe one evening about dark. I remember seeing a large blue ball of plasma moving down range from the muzzle. When it passed I was essentially blind. It took several minutes before I could see well enough to find that deer.

Be suer snd check out the Winchester 296 powder. That is my favorite stuff for magnum loads. I love the muzzle flash it creats when you touch it off.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens
