Author Topic: Sons first gun Nova,Mossberg--------- (Read 709 times)

I'm looking for my sons first shotgun in 20ga. I'm looking at Benelli nova youth, Mossberg Bantam, NEF turkey youth, or remington 870 youth. The Nova is around $300 for black and $365 for camo, about the same with remington, Mossberg from little over $200 to $300 and then theres the NEF/H&R turkey model for $130 camo The only draw back with this one is its only a full choke no tubes. Anyways if you have a opinion on this I would like to here about it. By the way this is for turkey hunting and waterfowl hunting.

you get what you pay for with mossberg, any of the other choices are nicer guns that will last longer and hold their value. I'm a fan of 870s and BPSs but the benelli is a good product

Hi my wife hunts with a youth mode BPS 20ga that is the only Browning we have dad and i both have Benelli 's i would go with a Benelli they are made good VM

Not trying to argue; however you get a lot more for your money with a Mossberg® than a Remington® or Benelli®.

For example...............

Remington® has a 1 year warranty; Mossberg® has 10. Remington® gives 1 choke tube (MOD); with Mossberg® you get 3 (IC, MOD, & FULL). The Mossberg® has an ambidexterous safety (as does a BPS). Mossberg® includes a sling and swivels. Who was the first with the 12GA 3½" gun? Mossberg®! Who was the first to OVER BORE barrels? Mossberg®! (Browning does for their guns as well). Mossberg® guns are not cheap; they are inexpensive, there is a difference. The Army & Marines are using Mossberg shotguns in the war in Iraq; no complaints from them.

Don't sell Mossberg® short; with the money saved you can buy a lot of other equipment.

Let me just throw my :money: in. I enjoy hunting with the H&R/NEF guns. Both my son and I hunt with them and enjoy the heck out of them. I like single shots for turkey hunting just because of the size and weight. I have the 12 ga with fixed full choke and it patterned well. I can understand your desire for a screw in choke tube but I don't think you will miss it that much on a youth gun. If it were me, I would go with the NEF because of the value. In just a few years you can spend more money on an adult sized gun for him.

Not trying to change your mind but Walmart® sells the Mossberg® 20GA Bantam for $199.99. You get all 3 chokes, 10 year warranty, sling & swivels. Additionally they give you a coupon for a full size stock & forearm for ½ price.

Hi a Remington has a 2 yr wan. and anybe a Mossberg has a 10yr wan. But i think my Benelli has a Lifetime wan. and when you go to sale the Remington if you do i think it will sale faster than the Mossberg i be one to tell you i am Not a Mossberg fan you get what you pay for when you buy one VM

you do get what you pay for with mossberg... if you want a quality product you'd be proud to own, pass on to kids, or resell years later, go with with a remmington, browning, or benelli... mossberg has devoted followers but i've never known a serious hunter or guide who prefers them... of course a bic will light a fire just as well as a zippo, but that isn't the entire equation

I dont see where you can go wrong with any of them. I have the Benelli Nova and like it. Have never owned a Mossburg but I Quail hunted with a man several years ago that shot a 500. I hunted with him for five seasons and the gun never left his truck. He never once cleaned it. Every now and then I would see him give it a healthy squirt of WD-40. Boy could he shoot that gun. He would fire off 5 rounds before I shot two with my semi auto.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you dont have to spend a mint on a reliable gun. Personally I would buy a Remington or Winchester with a nice wood stock that he could look back on years from now and see a gun that was his first, and still looked good enough to pass on to his son.
Just something about a quality wood finish and a shiny blue barrel.

I got my first Mossberg 500 about 37 years ago. I can tell you they are no where near the same quality now that they were then. Same for the Remington. I have an old 870 Wingmaster that is so smooth it almost functions by it's self.

The only arm I've seen that hasn't gone to the dark side over the years is the H&R. Simple, plain, and bullet proof.

I talked to a guy that when looking for a grizz out west a few years ago. The backup gun used by the guide was a 12 ga H&R cut back to 20."

Rusty; if you mean they were made better in the early years then now I have to agree. Case in point; Smith & Wesson® Wheel guns! The guns from the 60's, 70's, & early 80's beat today's crap in every way. H&R® and NEF® are great products; (except for the Chinese pump gun). "New & Improved" doesn't neccessarily men "Better".
