Barnes bullet redesign!
« on: February 03, 2005, 07:29:30 AM »
I just found this information in the Feb 2005 Barnes newsletter and wanted to share it with fellow reloaders.  "The X-cavity in the Barnes Triple Shock bullet has been redesigned to allow for controlled, reliable expansion over an even broader range of velocities. This same technology has also been incorporated into the entire Barnes X-bullet lineup, including the X, XLC, and TSX bullets.  The main difference is the addition of 3 to 5 shallow grooves in the shank of the TSX design. These grooves reduce the surface area of the bullet in contact with the bore, and provide a place for material displaced by the rifling to expand into. This “relief valve” allows the bullet to travel down the bore without major distortion as the bullet is engraved by the lands and grooves.  The result is reduced pressure and fouling, increased velocity, and better accuracy.  Our results in the lab and feedback from thousands of customers all show that the TSX bullet is the most accurate of the three X-bullet designs."

TomVan, I have loved Barnes bullets for some time now. I have been switching all my guns over to Barnes. I still have other bullets I use but I would say 90% of what I use is Barnes. My 500MAG eats a lot of cast though.  :-D

If I had ever found a load using them that got less than the 3" to over 10" groups they delivered in my guns I might have actually gotten to try them on game. But when they wouldn't shoot well enough in my guns even after exhaustive testing in 6-8 rifles I gave up on them.

Graybeard:  I had the same type of experience with Barnes bullets until the Triple-Shocks became available.  They produced much smaller groups in my .300 Win Mag and my .270 Win than the standard Barnes X. In fact, the Triple Shocks produce the smallest groups in those rifles of any bullet I have yet tried.

Graybeard, I do not know what happened, but I have 6 different rifles I use nothing but Barnes X bullets in and several pistols. I have consistent 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the rifles. I also have great results out to 200 yards. I took my Caribou in Alaska with a 300 yard shot from my 300WIN MAG using a 165 gr Barnes X bullet. My Browning A bolt in 243 shoots sub MOA at 100 yards with the Triple Shocks. I have found the Barnes bullets are more accurate at higher velocities.

Dunno either. I've tried them in seveal calibers and several guns. I've worked with numerous powders and multiple seating depths. I've given them what I feel is a fair shot. Even tried some factory loads using them. JUNK. Some of them wouldn't even stay on an 8.5"x11" target sheet at 100 yards.

Would love to try them if they'd hit the target.

I'm assuming you haven't tried the new TSX. This is one of the most accurate bullets I've ever used.
