Browning 1895 & mounting repro Lyman model 38 peep sight
« on: August 08, 2004, 02:24:30 PM »
I finally received the reproduction Lyman 38 sight from Buffalo Arms after ordering it late last summer.

Looks OK, but for the life of me, I can not figure out how to install it onto the Browning 1895 ( in 30-06) that I have. ( This is a reproduction of the WInchester model 1895 )

I know that Buffalo Arms web site says the front screw is not metric threads, but I figured I could just re-tap the browning hole....?

What I can't figure out is where and how to mount it....none of the screw holes on the browning seem to line up with this sight....could it be that the screw locations on the Browining are different from the Winchester original ? ( Had this question answered on another forum - nope, looks like the screw holes are identical to the Winchester. )

If you are interested, I can email a pic to show the parts.  What confounds me is what to do about the rear lever screw ...??. Where does that go ? Looks like a new hole has to be drilled and tapped.

If anyone knows of a website or has info about installing a Lyman model 21 or model 38 sight, I'dd appreciate any guidance. Or can anyone suggest a good Gunsmith who knows Winchesters and mounting these Lyman sights.

Thanks,

HikerLT@alum.wpi.edu

hikerlt-

What kind of progress are you making with that peep sight?  I read your question on that other forum, and the responses.  My wallet won't allow for a 95 right now, but I'm interested in how things work out for your project.  I read an article about putting a peep onto a 95, but all my gun books are boxed up and in storage right now, maybe someone that has some old gun rags laying around could help out.  It seems like Mike Venturino wrote an article about putting a peep onto a 95 not too long ago, it was probably in Shooting Times.

Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply. At this point, I am putting the project into slow mode - I need to get more information on mounting a Lyman model 21 or model 38 sight, and I am also continuing my search for a top rated reputable gunsmith who knows Winchester 1895's and has experience and knowledge in mounting these sights. The Browning repro I want to mount it on to is in mint "used to be"unfired condition, and I do not want to damage it by having the peep sight mounted incorrectly.  I'll keep everyone informed if and when I make some progress. Glad to find this website.......if people want to see pics of the Browning and the repro Lyman sight, I can email them, or they can see the pics over on "that other website"...( not sure if it's allowed to post the name of the website here...)

Thanks,

Hikerit, I am perplexed, or maybe confused about your Lyman  No38 sight application problems. The Winchester Model 1895 requires the Lyman No 38WR. If Buffalo Arms sold you the sight as correct for the '95, and it will not set right on the factory screw holes, then something is wrong. I am thinking that they may have mailed you a sight that is more compatible with the 1886. I dragged out a couple of my '86s just to see if there was an obvious difference. I don't own a '95 with a Lyman side mounted sight, but it appears that the '86 sight is too short in length to line up with the '95 frame holes. Is this your problem? If so, then you may have the incorrect sight.
I get my kicks from an 1886.

Mounting the Reproduction Lyman 38 type receiver sight

I copied this from Buffalo Arms site.  It look like you have to tap the front or replace the screw and drill and tap for the rear lever.  I just got a Winchester 1895 and I am considering the same sight. :D

Dan

Reproduction Lyman 38 type receiver sight. This sight has .200" of windage adjustment either side of zero. The sight has a pivoting peep to give you two choices for aperture diameter (.080" .170"). Designed for the Model 1886 and 1895 Winchester will also fit current production Model 336 & 95 Marlins. Parts interchange with originals. You will need to have the rear mounting hole drilled and tapped in the receiver by your gunsmith. The mounting screws that come with this sight are made for the antique Model 95 Winchesters, if you have one of the current production models then you will need to have your gunsmith make a new front mounting screw.

I had the same problem

As soon as I got my sight from Buffalo, I realized that something was wrong.  Not only do the mounting screws need to be retaped/drilled and tapped, the thin set screw was positioned too far towards the center.  It interfered with the bolt, instead of contacting the left side of the frame like it should have.  I had to drill and tap that screw too.  I have an original Lyman sight on a '95 carbine to make a comparison and found a few other discrepancies.  Not only is there a problem with the thread pitch, the dimensions of the Parts Unknown sight are not the same as an original.  The new sight was shorter along the side where it mounts to the frame and it doesn't extend across the top of the receiver like my original does.  Luckily I needed enough elevation for the sight to be high enough for the windage knob to clear top of the right side of the receiver.  On my original sight the knob hangs over the right side, so there is no interference.  I contacted Buffalo Arms and they told me I could have returned the sight before making any modifications.  After waiting over a year, I didn't want to do that, but it's a shame that you wait a year, pay $225 ($50 more than the original quote) and then have to do so much work to make the thing fit.
