Need 45 Colt load data

I've searched the net and thru all my reloading manuals but there are no loads listed for Winchester 296 and the 45 Colt.  If anybody know of a source for that info please let me know.

You have got to be kidding Dusty. You need to buy some new loading manuals. I don't think I own one that does list such data in the TC/Ruger section. If you're not using one of those or an FA then I'd advise against using it. I'm aware of several loading data sites to include the Winchester site with such data. Have to checked Steve's Pages? He'll pop in here with a link soon I'm sure.

OK, maybe I screwed up here a bit.  I'm looking for loads for CAST bullets. My Hornady manual and  the Speer manual didn't have any.  The Lyman 48th edition reloading book was devoid as was the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.

HOLD ON STEVE!!  Don't blow me out of the water here!  I went back and took a second look and sure 'nuff there wuz some 45 Colt loads.  HOWEVER, I'm suspect'n that theys for jacketud boolets and not fer them cast kind I makes out in the garage when the wife ain't look'n.  Izzat the case?

You can safely use jacketed bullet data for loading cast bullets but not the other way around. Lead bullets have less friction in barrel so any loading data for a jacketed bullet of same weight will work fine with cast bullets. I guess now I see why you made your comment regarding no data. Darn few manuals these days list separate data for cast bullets. Lyman is the main exception and is a manual no one should be without. Accurate Powder does to but only with their powders. Some times Hodgdon does and they list powders other than their own especially Winchester powders since they buy a lot of their powder from Winchester.

Go to John Linebaugh's website and look on the left hand side of the page. Read the article called Dissolving the myth; Discovering the Potential. This will tell you everything you want to know about the 45 Colt and cast bullets.(10 pages) The other articles are great reading also. :grin:

Here's little P.S. regarding the loads I posted from Paco's article. He said that he's used the 23gr load for more than ten years & on game up to & over 400lbs, & that in his opinion, this was the best load in Colt SAA's.
Of course, he says to start a couple or three grains lower, work up slowly, & be careful. jd45.

Linbaugh never had a site of his own. He had a page hosted by sixgunner.com.  Sixgunner has recently gone through a software upgrade and the old linebaugh link (http://www.sixgunner.com/linebaugh/default.htm) no longer works.  You'd have to ask the owner of sixgunner.com what happend to it.

I compiled the following a while back for my own use from what I consider to be fairly reliable internet sources.  The assumption in putting this together was Ruger/FA/Contender, not colt/clone/S&W.  

I believe the rumor that H110/WW296 are the same thing and use the same load data for both.

I've also found the Paco Kelly article on 45 in leverguns useful.  Steve's Pages has useful charge ranges for various powders across a huge range of cartridges but, in my opinion, he doesn't draw a very clear line between Ruger/FA/Contender data and Colt/clone/S&W data in the 45 colt cartridge.

Use the follow at your own risk.  You'd be insane not to check something you got off the internet against a couple of sources published by the bullet/powder manufacturers.

Right, I don't have any loading data for the .45 Colt...

Well, maybe almost no data...

Let's see now, in the pistol section I only have data for bullets weighing from 160 grains to 300 grains and I only list 42 different powders.

And in the rifle section I have data for bullets weighing from 185 grains to 300 grains and only 16 different powders.

You are correct, about W-296.  I only have data for bullets weighing 225, 230, 240, 250, 260 and 300 grains.

How remiss of me...

One of the articles is titled Heavyweight bullets part1&2. Another has to do with hangun hunting and for the life of me I can't remember what the other one is. If I'm not mistaken there were four articles altogether. They were all good reading. As a side note, when I finished reading the articles I called John Linebaugh to confirm the loading data. He said the data was correct and I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly and helpful he was on the phone. He does't mind answering questions. (especially on the 45 Colt) :grin:
