Hello, Cknight!

As a fellow S&W wheelgun fan, I can identify with your delimna on WHICH .22 pistol to buy!

I have the S&W model 17 .22 Masterpiece, and the M41 target pistol w/heavy barrel. Both shoot very well, and I used to compete with them regularly. Excellent quality, finish, and accuracy.

As for plinking and casual handgun hunting, you won't go wrong with either.

I would advise against purchase of an entry-level or economy .22 pistol or revolver for a simple reason: you will very quickly find you can outshoot your gun and decide to buy a replacement!

Having said that, the only bottom-end .22 pistol I can consider is the Ruger Standard model or it's target-sighted bull-barrel versions. All shoot very well. I've owned several, and have since traded them off as my interest in "prettier" guns matured.

The old High-Standard and Colt Woodsman models were very nice, but too pricey for me.

I've no experience with the newer S&W or Ruger alloy and plastic framed .22 pistols.

auto loader- ruger mark 2
wheel gun- taurus tracker 6 inch barrel
i strongly suggest that you handle the taurus and a smith (side by side, preferably) before you make your decision. you wont regret it anyway, and it doesnt cost to look. good luck! :wink:

We all know the Mark ll or the 22/45 target models will shoot better than 98% of us on this forum. Either one is quite aforadable and will last a lifetime. Plus if you really want to trick one out the parts are available and inexpensive.----Preference might dictate another choice, but from a pratical standpoint the Rugers are hard to beat!

If you go with the ruger I would opt for the MKII. Accessaries are far more available for it than the 22/45. I have a 22/45 and have often wished I had bought the MKII instead. KN

My vote is the Ruger Mark II

If serious target get the custom target slab side. It is set for scope and even comes with base and rings.

The standard 4 inch barrel is also very nice to plink with, light weight and balance is not too bad either.

The price and availability of improvements (i.e. Volquartzen accurizer kit, etc) make the Ruger a great choice.

Ruger has a lifetime warranty. I know a shooter that just sent his 33 year old MarkI in for free factory repair...Ruger is a good companly to do business with.

Not a whole lot to add but I would go with a Ruger...they are solid performers and you can personalize/trick them out as you see fit. The only real downside is taking them down to clean...they can be a real booger until you figure them out. After that, they are easy to maintenance.

...now if I can only come-up with the $'s I need for that Hammerli!!!! :lol:

for what it's worth, the ruger slabside with a millet red-dot sight makes little steel .22 size chickens so easy to hit at 75 yards it's boring...if you want to plink and hunt, get the ruger. if you want to tinker and practice clearing jams, get the high standard.don't get me wrong, the old high standard i bought new 32 years ago is super accurate, but is so finicky about feeding i've quit messing with it and went with the contender..

I buying a Contender on Monday, fitted with a .22 LR barrel. I really want to try to tip those barnyard animals over.

Do you have a tip on a scope for this purpose?

only got a burris 4 x with target turrets on it, it's really sensitive about eye to scope distance.i tried out a leopold (?) a guy at the range had, it was head and shoulders above mine....

most of the larger companies offer pretty good 22 autos, the walther p-22, the browning buckmark, sig trailside, beretta neo. those with s&w's and rugers are all pretty good pistols. if you can outshoot one of them you are a good shot. i like the old walther style guns (full slide) such as whats offered by bersa thunderer, astra constable, beretta mdl 70 and my own much beloved v bernidelli mdl 80. hold some in your hand and see if one doesn't tell you it feels right. :-)
