Build a 1911?
« on: February 08, 2005, 05:46:18 PM »
A back in the 80s (1980s) when I was toying with being a gunsmith I built 2 1911s (commander sized) off of Ranger Frames with the coaching of a master gunsmith. Except for mounting MMC sights, I put them together and they shot well, built each for under $300..... I traded them off  . Now I am thinking about building one again. What is different now to build one (maybe under $450)?

The number and variety of parts available for the 1911 has exploded!  There are more variations eaach year although most are just that variations on a theme..  Still there are some relatively new concepts out there.  The biggest difference is in prices..  25 years ago everything was a bunch cheaper..  But building a 1911 with good quality parts is not really a cheap undertaking.  It is however great fun...
