Ruger Old Army Uncle Mikes nipples
« on: January 27, 2005, 04:26:33 AM »
Just purchased a Stainless R.O.A. If I can still find them in stock, is/was there any advantage to replacing the ruger factory nipples with the stainless Uncle Mikes? Any disadvantages?

#1  Good luck in finding any uncle mikes nipps.  They went out o bizness.
#2  Go to Thunder Ridge website and get a set of their stainless nipps or the Treso brand.  You won't be sorry.

Few days ago Natchez had them listed as closeout. Bought the last two sets.

As far as I know they quit selling the replacement nipps.  Still in Biz I guess doing other stuff.  Can't be sure tho.

There is a set of Uncle Mike's nipples for the Old Army on e-bay. Check here.

ROA nipples

I heard a rumor that the factory furnished nipples on the ROA are of such a length as to avoid the hammer hitting them when dry fired.  If this is true, how would other nipples compare on this point?

unspellable,

I know for a certainty that about twenty years ago that the Ruger hammer did not strike the nipples. What they have done since then I can't swear to.

I have a new pair of blue ROAs and the nipples are stainless. They also do not hit the hammer. The hammer lands on the frame if dry fired. I have shot them twice so far and used #10 Remington caps. I had no caps fall off, but twice I had to hit a cap twice to fire it in a 5 stage match. I blame the new rules for that. I don't think I had the caps on staight and on the nipples far enough. I loved the new ones. Shot the match with no pistol misses and only one rifle miss. Durn, almost a clean one.  :-)
BTW, I also have stainless ROAs and one thing that is different is the hammer spring. The staineless ROAs have a stainless spring, but the rate feels the same. I don't know why they would't use the same spring in all ROAs. Also, there is a rumor that they are not making the 7 1/2" blue ones with fixed sights any more. I know Davidsons was closing out of them and I got them for a great price.
