40 grain load in brass frame Henry?
« on: February 14, 2005, 07:16:06 PM »
How many of you out there with Brass frame Henrys shoot max loads?  I'm refering to 45 long colt with 40 grains of 3f black powder and a 250 grain bullet.  I'm using Graf's 3f black powder, the Swiss is a lot hotter(and more expensive) and gets used in 38 long colt and 45-70.

Any problems with frame stretch or toggle link wear that anybody has noticed?

I shot a 50 round box through and was very pleased with the results, no gas leakage on the case, bore fouling on last shot looked like the first shot(single huge lube grove helped some, but was a lot less fouling than 30 grains), and only fouling that got in the action was from smoke curling out the chamber when I leavered anouther round in.  Recoil was hardly noticable as well, and while it still smoked like black powder, it wasn't quite as bad as it used to be.

I used a drop tube and about 1/8" compression to get the 40 grains in the starline brass.

I would very much like to make this my standard load for the rifle, though it's a bit hot for pistols.

Thanks Butler :-D

Did I mention that 40 grains in a 5 1/2" pistol is a bit much? :)

My Father recently purchased a Uberti Mallenium revolver for home defense and to pack in the woods.  He suggested I load some black powder rounds for him because I don't like loading smokless.  Well after he got it we took it out back and tried a few cylinderfulls of smokless, then I let him have cylinder full of my 40 grain loads.  The look he gave me was priceless!  His only comment was "you might want to cut back on the powder for me"  I let him try 30 grian loads and after that he talked me into loading smokless.
