For $170 he better throw in a lot more than a case and box of ammo. You can buy a brand new Ruger 10/22 for that much. You can buy a brand new Marlin Mdl. 60 and still have $50 left over. The guy is ripping you off!!! You can find good used Marlin 25's for under $125. Heck, I rarely see them over $90. Look at
www.auctionarms.com right now. They have 2 of them listed. One is "factory new", there are no bids on it and the asking price is $135. Another one in "excellent" condition is being sold without reserve and currently has 7 bids, the highest one is $22 so far. They won't come close to $170.
They are okay guns, but there are better ones out there for the money. The bottom of the line CZ .22 bolt action can be had for about $190, and CZ has a very good reputation currently.
If you are trying to start out with a basic bolt action rifle, try a Savage. I don't know the model number off the top of my head, but you can get one from Wal-Mart for around $125. Black synthetic stock, stainless, clip fed. If you know someone into guns, maybe from the local range, have them go with you to a gun show and look at good used guns. You can find something basic for $100, then once you are comfortable with it and ready to move on, you can upgrade.
