Newbie help Please
« on: February 08, 2005, 09:59:34 AM »
All right guys,
Got a couple newbie questions please
I wanting to get inexpensive both a bolt action .22 starting out and then pick up a new semi .22 so I can have some fun at the range and get back into shooting. The gun shop is a very reputable shop here in Houston.

I’m an adult shooter and found a Glenfield/Marlin 25N in excellent shape with 3x scope for 170.00
#1 Is this a good starter bolt .22 gun?
#2 Will the after market pre-2004 Basix trigger kit work with this model?

The gun is in excellent shape and looks like it was hardly ever used.
The gentleman at the gun shop spoke highly of these guns and offered a free soft gun case and 100 rounds of ammo to get me going. They offer a 30 day warranty on the gun operating correctly.

In the shape it’s in, seems like it would be a cool older style gun just to have in my future gun cabinet.

BTW:  This board and rimfirecentral.com  rocks. Lots of info and nice people.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to GBO! :D  The Rifle Basix web site indicates the MAR-1 will work on the 25N...and midsouth has it in stock for the best price I've seen...

For $170 he better throw in a lot more than a case and box of ammo.  You can buy a brand new Ruger 10/22 for that much.  You can buy a brand new Marlin Mdl. 60 and still have $50 left over.  The guy is ripping you off!!!  You can find good used Marlin 25's for under $125.  Heck, I rarely see them over $90.  Look at www.auctionarms.com right now.  They have 2 of them listed.  One is "factory new", there are no bids on it and the asking price is $135.  Another one in "excellent" condition is being sold without reserve and currently has 7 bids, the highest one is $22 so far.  They won't come close to $170.

They are okay guns, but there are better ones out there for the money.  The bottom of the line CZ .22 bolt action can be had for about $190, and CZ has a very good reputation currently.

If you are trying to start out with a basic bolt action rifle, try a Savage.  I don't know the model number off the top of my head, but you can get one from Wal-Mart for around $125.  Black synthetic stock, stainless, clip fed.  If you know someone into guns, maybe from the local range, have them go with you to a gun show and look at good used guns.  You can find something basic for $100, then once you are comfortable with it and ready to move on, you can upgrade.

Hey welcome to the board Greg. Armory is right, my buddy bought a nice M25 for 80 bucks. Another buddy bought a 881 or 882 something like that, for 120$ in 22 mag, and it's a Ducks Unlimited stainless!! Good luck on the rifle hunt!

If your budget can stand just a bit more, say around $200 I'd sugest you take a look at a CZ. It is a match quality rifle with sporter looks. The accuracy right out of the box just can't be beat.
