Question about the mini 14 and RR
« on: February 07, 2005, 09:59:14 PM »
I am currently looking at  purchase of the above species.
I have been offered the thought about the quality, as in accuracy, of the barrel.
Is this a legitimate beef or is there too much expectations of such a rifle being more accurate than it should.
Have heard, from a dealer, that the new models are accurized, what ever that means.
Blessings

Question about the mini 14 and RR

Hi will,

It's a plinker.  May shoot 2-3" at 100yrds with a scope.  An AR will probably shoot 1" or better for three times the money.  The mini is (at least the last three I've owned) reliable and works with everything you feed it.  I would not spend too much money accurizing it, it just isn't worth it.  Ruger evidently wants an inexpensive carbine that will digest inexpensive ammo and this is it.  Buy it if you want it....it's not much of an investment.  You'll hit what you shoot at providing you are not shooting tacks.

You don't need to spend three times the money to get an accurate AR.  There are plenty out there in the $700 range, ie. Rock River, Bushmaster, Olympic, etc..  All offer a drastic improvement in accuracy performance over the Ruger Mini-14.

williamlayton,

The Mini-14 can easily be made into a 1" or better shooter with just a couple of changes.  Mainly the barrel and the gas block have to be changed.  The best part is no one will think you're some fanatic out running around with a military rifle shooting up the country side.  It's for this reason I chose the Mini-14 as my duty weapon of choice.  After the accuracy job I had done it shoots with any AR want-a-be going.  Lawdog
