Question for JJHack about rifle safeties
« on: February 08, 2005, 08:56:59 AM »
Hi Mr. Hack, I hope you don't mind me asking you a question but I've read this article and I'm a little confused. Why does the author thinks the safety catch is on the "wrong" side for all of the American rifles, while the Mauser's safety is on the correct side.  :? I've never had a problem getting the safety off on any Ruger or Winchester fast enough to hit a jumped whitetail and even though it's not dangerous they're certainly fast when they need to be. Can you shed any light on his statements? Thanks, CEJ..

With many things in life when you only know one method or system it can be very easy for you to be good with it because of the practice. However there is a situation with the Model 70 safety that should have been done different although I have no real complaint with it as it is.

When gripping the pistol grip tight in a panic it is much MUCH easier to flip the safety off with your thumb while able to grasp the stock tightly.

It is a little more difficult with the index finger pulling it away from the trigger or,.... by using the thumb and having a loose grip on the rifle stock for that moment.

This is "grasping at straws" to find a bad feature of the Model 70 in my opinion. Truth is the safety would be better placed on the other side. However I have not struggled all that much with it located as it is now.

JJHACK - Thank you for your reply, now I have a better understanding of what he was saying. I guess I'll have to try out the Mauser saftey and see how that works compared to the ones I'm used to... CEJ...
