help which one
« on: February 11, 2005, 03:47:04 PM »
Ok gentlemen I have been sitting by idle for about a year now watching this board. I am about to make the plunge into handism. After all that I have read here I have pretty much decided on the .243 I will be using it for yotes (which are taking over here in s. ga) and then in time deer also would like to shoot some paper and would like to be able to silence my remchester friends that think it takes more than one shot. I cant decide which model ultra varmint, ultra hunter, handi superlight ........etc I would like to know which of these will be the best shooter this gun will prob stay in  my truck yr round but when hunting I walk alot but weight isn't really an issue. I want to know which one and what type of groups I can expect out of one of these and effective sniping range on yotes.Sorry for the long post my mind and heart are just racing. I have not priced the others but the u-varmint and u-hunter I have found a place that will order for $237.50 ("15% over cost) it is not really a mom and pop (which I would support) but should I even waste time going to Walmart(my local walmart actually has friendly knowledgeable willing people in there gun dept)

I picked up the superlight model in 243 used but unfired for 139.00 to date I have fired two boxes of factory ammo through it rem 100 gr corelock gave me groups of 1.25" winchester 80 gr softpoints gave me groups under .5" To say the least I am very pleased with the little gun. For me the weight was a factor so at 5.5# and 20" barrel I can't wit to carry this baby next season

I have the 223 UV and I will tell you that after a while, weight WILL be a factor.  They are heavy.  The combo of laminated stock and 24" heavy barrel add up.

My suggestion is to go middle of the road and get the 243 Ultra Hunter.  Laminated but normal barrel weight. Still not a light weight but lighter than bull barrel.

If it is truly to be a truck gun, consider the synthetic stock.  More durable, lighter, and less prone to temperature issues.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
