Opinions on older Springfield 1911A1

I have the opportunity to buy a Springfield "Standard" 1911A1 made in 1993.  It is in new condition in the blue plastic case with all of its original papers and accessories.  This one is blue with wooden grips, three dot sights and commander style hammer.  Everything else looks like standard 1911A1 configuration.  Price is $300.  Is this about right for used plain Jane Springfields? :?

threepdr - I would get it.  That is what I have and I love it.  I just loaded 200 rounds so Icould go play with it but I want to find my brass and we still have snow.  Dang!

It is new.  Get it.  Shoot the schmidt out of it and enjoy it.  Mikey.

My first centerfire handgun was a basic Springfield Armory 1911, which I purchased in late 1992. That gun was the absolute worst handgun I've ever owned.  :(  For most of my teen-age years, I had pined for a .45 ACP "Government Model," having been exposed to probably too many  John Wayne flicks, "Combat" TV episodes, and issues of Guns & Ammo. Suffice to say that my Springfield shattered my view of the 1911. In retrospect, I know that one specimen should not taint my opinion of the venerable 1911, but to this day I've not owned another 1911. So, you can guess what my recommendation is regarding that 1993-vintage Springfield. If you've already bought it, I just hope you have better luck than I did.

Over the years I've had two of these. Both did very well, but only after tweaking.

The first required a new firing pin stop, and the second needed a new extractor.

This sort of thing isn't unusual with any of the 1911's, and isn't that hard to correct.

For $300, I'd go for it.

I would jump on it like a duck on a June bug.  :D

Buy It

Sounds like a deal.  My first 45 was a SA 1911....way back when.  I sold it after it kept failing to feed.  New to 1911s and did know how to tweek it.  Afterwards, I bought two more and used them for many years in USPSA/IPSC competition.  They functioned perfectly!  Recently sold one to a friend, but will probably buy it back for my son.  The other is already claimed  by my odlest son.  I have replaced the inners over the years.  Mainly out of "competition" prep and not due to failure.  About two years ago, one failed to extract.  The extractor tension was gone.  A field stripping at the range and a pair of vise grips was all that was needed to revive the tension and it still functions flawlessly.

After all that, I'd recommend getting it.  If for nothing else, you get a forged frame and slide for a bargain price.  The remainder can be replaced inexpensively with CMC (McCormick) parts.  Oh, Dan Wesson has a special on their match 45 barrels for $69.  Check their website.  I picked up a similar deal from SA a few years ago and turned a "good" shooter into a "great"shooter.
