Sendero barrel.....
« on: February 15, 2005, 07:00:47 AM »
Looking for a new or barely used 25-06 barrel for my Sendero. Any good places to check? I might just get a custom but not sure yet. Thanks in advance.

Sendero barrel.....

For the trouble of installing and headspacing a new barrel I would seriously consider a premium barrel. I knew a fellow that allowed the bore of his 700 ADL FS to rust inside and the rifle went from .75 MOA to 2.5 MOA in a a couple of months. Even after lapping the bore it never shot better than 1.75 MOA again.
While at a custom gunsmith's shop he noticed a brand new 30-06 Remington barrel in the discard bin.
After some discussion he finally got the gunsmith to install and headspace the barrel on his action with no warranty on accuracy. With the new barrel the rifle started shooting about 1.5 MOA with selected handloads. He hunted with it for one season and took the rifle to Henry Ball for a McGowen Super Match Grade chrome moly barrel in .270. That same rifle now shoots sub MOA groups with almost any load you stuff in it. Its accuracy is almost scary.

The proof may be in the pudding but the accuracy is in the barrel.

I think that the custom barrel may be the route I go. I like the caliber which is a 25-06 but I bought the gun used and the barrel was cut down to 18 1/2" for some reason. I got a pretty good deal on it and going to use it as a project gun. Any suggestions on a barrel? Kinda new to the custom end of it so  thanks in advance to everyone.

Most custom gun smiths have thier own prefference. Mine likes Mcgowen, some prefer Douglas. You may need to do some reading now and some pricing.

The cheap option obviously is to just return it to Remington to be rebarreled. They will do an excellent job and when it returns will most likely be a well under MOA rifle. They won't gurantee that of course but I've never yet owned a Rem. 700 Heavy barrel rifle that didn't shoot pretty much every thing under an inch and a lot of the loads in the 1/2 inch or under range.

No custom maker will gurantee you better accuracy than Remington rifles usually deliver with factory barrels.

To be honest I did not even think of sending the rifle back to Remington. My 25-06 Sendero shoots .25 MOA with a factory heavy barrel. I see no reason why a Sendero that they would rebarrel would not do at least as well. Somehow it never crossed my mind. Wonder how much it would cost to have the factory put on a new barrel?

About 1/4 what it would to have a custom barrel put on it or maybe even less.
