Scientific American, in the same time period, published many patent drawings of  cannon - it was high tech at the time.

The one I remember was the naval cannon, which after loading, had a copper cap placed over the muzzle.  The tube was extended through a water tight port - under the water line.  The theory was that one shot broadside to another ship would quickly blow the bottom out of the other ship!

Powder Keg,
The Reb's built a couple of gun very close in profile. Seems to me they were 3" something and about 6' foot long. There is/ or was one on display in Petersburg.
I will look in Ripley's book more info.

And there is ONE two barreled cannon, which is on display in front of one of the town halls here in Virginia.  The idea was to fire both at the same time with a chain between the two cannonballs.  Didn't work as expected.

Powder Keg,
It's possible that the Drawing was for this gun. Pate, Tappey & Lumsden
Made in 1861, 3.13 cal., 70" oal.  cyl. 13.5 and a 48"smoothbore barrel. It is outside the Center Hill Mansion. The other one blew up in trials.

CW,
The 2 barreled cannon is in Athens ,Ga. Got some pictures of it last spring. A neat freak gun.
If I new how to size pictures I would try and post one.

Guardsgunner - thanks for the correction.  Quite some history behind that shootin' iron.

Here's a link: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-vetscor/1342639/posts

I just did a search on Athens, Georgia, cannon, double barrel and got a wealth of information.
