I have an 1886 Win. in 40-82.  The model and caliber were the reasons I acquired it, but then I like old and obsolete calibers.  It isn't a thumper by any standards but it is 40 cal. to begin with.  I've used it successfully on hogs and deer.  In it's time it was considered more than adequate elk medicine and flat shooting.  Obviously that was a few years back.

well sharps 45-90,  l also like the old calibers to,l think they have a unique character to them and are fun to shoot,my 450 alaskan is built on a browning 71  and l find it to be quite a potent bear rifle,l have a couple of 45-70's and  a 50-140 single shot also to but l have kind of left them alone for now,,lm trying to buy back my old 45-90 that l sold years ago and still kicking myslef for it,but yes swage l have heard of people building 458's,416 and 375 charfield taylors on the blr's not the 411 though? have you  ever seen any of these rifles or shot them?and yes l was referring to these calibers partner and should have made myself a little clearer when l posted.thanks guys!

swage l have fired the 50 alaskan and it is another real thumper,l stuck to the 450 alaskan though as the rifle was as new and was close enough to the most bigbore power l thought l needed for bears,l have now reconsidered and l think l would go to the 50 alaskan ,why ?cause bigger is better haha,no  l do like the 50 caliber and l have the 50-140 on a ruger no1 and the fellow who made it was shooting 570 barnes out at over 2300?  with no pressure signs at all,and he took his first buffalo this year with it, in the northwest territories and the bullet was like 98 %weight retention, the bullet went through both shoulders and he found it on the ice of the lake he shot the animal on.so lm kind of turning in the 50 cal direction l think. that 50-110 sounds like another real thumper and l take it your making some 50 cal bullets swage?but back to the blr's, is there anyplace where a person can get some imfo on what has to be done to these and the cost to do it swage,as lm considering picking up a blr in 7 mm mag for a project rifle, but can you shoot a full lenght 458 out of it and will it chamber properly,as that is my biggest concern, especially when l come an angry bruin.thanks

Yes to answer your question i have shot the 411 Hawk in the Win 71

Are you sure that wasn't a Win 1895?  I have a 411 Hawk, basically an improved 400 Whelen with the 30-06 case blown out and shoulder moved forward.  Seems the cartridge may be too long to fit in a 71.

The Hawk is a pretty interesting round.  Similar ballistically to the 405 Winchester, but you can add about 150 fps per bullet weight for the Hawk over the Winchester.  For more information, check Fred Zeglin's website at http://www.z-hat.com
