M-94 Side Mounts?
« on: February 01, 2003, 08:05:10 PM »
Anybody have any experience with side mounts on the top ejecting M-94 Winchester?  Got a chance to get a Tasco side mount for $15.00.  Is it worth messing with?

I think mine was a B square but can't be certain - it was aluminum and had relatively weak attachment to the receiver - 3 small screws I think.  I tried it a little but did't care for it - but can't say I gave it a thorough work-out.  It was a long time ago and I may not have known about lock tite back then.  If you have a spare scope, the $15 mount might be worth a try but it will make the gun feel and handle much differently.  If I recall, I had trouble with consistent cheek placement, eye relief and sight picture - maybe a cheek pad attachment would help.   Just came across that old mount the other day - maybe I should try it out again.  I think the old Leupold forward mount looks better and would be easier - and it would fit the current "Scout" idea. But I saw such a mount go for about $75 on Ebay last month.

Dand: You mentioned something I had not considered: the effect of an offset scope on the  balance and handling qualities of the gun.  Offset asymetrcally to  the left  instead of directly over the bore, it would cause the rifle to hang awkwardly  to the left,  wouldn't it?

Balance was a little weird

Yup, if I remember the side mount did seem strange - upset my sense of symmetry. But to be honest I didn't give it a thorough try out.  You got me to thinking about it. I have a spare scope these days. It might be fun to give it a more serious try-out.  I think the sighting and head placement are the most problematic of the set up.

M-94 Winchester Side-mounts

The B- Square and a couple of other mounts allow the mounting on a top eject M-94 without the necessity of drilling and tapping the left side of the receiver. These mounts use factory holes for the receiver sight and finger lever screw on almost all post-WWII Model 94's and Model 64's. A few pre war models were also factory drilled and tapped. However I'm sure you understand that if you have to drill and tap a receiver on an untapped rifle it WILL greatly reduce the value of an otherwise collectible piece, like +/- 50% in some cases. It does take some getting used to this sight configuration and it does hurt the balance of the rifle. If can overlook this, side mounted scopes are ok.
You mean to say there are rifles other than old Winchester leverguns ?

Advocate,
I have a side mount on my Winchester '94 Carbine. The offset scope is no bother, for me,at all. I also have offset scopes on my Springfield Krag and my GI 30 cal Carbine.
It came with a Kwiksite side mount, which I replaced with a Williams mount, which is still made.
Fifteen bucks is a good price;give it a go.

A guy on another board had his scope mounted on the bolt. He posted the pictures and it looked great. Pictures are gone now. That little square box with the X is there now.

ONE OF MY WINCHESTER LEVERS HAS A BEEMANS #3 SCOPE MOUNTED DIRECTLY ON THE BOLT SO IS OVER THE BARREL SIGHT LINE, WORKS WELL.

AT THE TIME WHEN I HAD THE SCOPE MOUNTED I HAD A BASE MADE AND ATTACHED BY A GUNSMITH AS THERE WAS NOT AN ADAPTER FOR THE BEEMANS FOR A WEAVER BASE. NOW YOU CAN MOUNT A BEEMANS ON A WEAVER BASE AND WOULD ONLY REQUIRE THE BOLT TO BE DRILLED AND TAPED.

THE ONLY TROUBLE WITH A SET UP LIKE MINE IS THE SCOPE MUST BE SHORT OR IT WILL BE IN THE WAY FOR EJECTION.

I asked, "I meant to ask you. By chance have you in the exitement to chamber another round put the scope in your eye? Hey, I'm serious."

NO BECAUSE I DISMOUNT WHEN I LEVER AND DO THE SAME WITH A BOLT ACTION. THAT WAS THE WAY I LEARNED 60 YEARS AGO. JUST AS I WAS TO USE A SHOTGUN BY AIMING AT A FIXED SPOT IN SPACE IN FRONT OF THE INTENDED TARGET. ALL WORK FOR ME . THAT IS WHAT MAKES A HORSE RACE. BEST TO YOU.

Just another option to consider.
