Bob, I been re-scanning (I don't read) old posts and Montanan hit upon what you should do instead of getting a BC and reaming up to 110.  You already have a Target Special so just to be different you should have that reamed up to 38-72.  Brass is about the same cost (~$1.50 each :? ) and you already have the dies and such that will be acceptable.

wadda ya think?

Or, you could consider reaming to .375 JDJ which is the 444 Marlin case necked down to .375 with no other changes.  The Hodgdon 26 manual litst it and gives 1951 fps for a 300 grain bullet out of a 14" barrel for a max load of 46.0 grains of H4895 powder.

  What advantages would this have over the standard 38/55 for BP? Would this help deal with, or better solve with the chamber/ bore problem that some have posted about? Certainly would have more room inside for BP stuff!                                                        Woodbutcher

Ya know,
I've been doing some soul-searching after the fact (sent my rifle to the factory).  
There was enuff length to my rifle's chamber that I could probably have filled a case with GOEX FFg and seated/crimped an OP wad on top of that after compressing the powder slightly.  Then, to shoot it I'd drop a bullet into the chamber, followed by the powder-filled case and shot it schuetzen-style.

But no, I was looking for easy so off it went to Gardiner MA.

And, I don't want to shoot BP.  I want to use some of the 40+ pounds of DATA 2200 I have on hand.

I am gonna leave it alone for awhile, I already have a bunch of brass and boolets and it shoots the .380s pretty well I just need better sights and work on my loads, .38-72 sound kinda nice thou :roll:  8)

BOB, If I'm not happy with my 38-55, it is going to become a 38-56. This is a 45-70 case necked down to 38. This was chambered by Winchester in the 1886 prior to 1890. It has 10 grains more usabe cse capacity than the 38-55. I don' know how it stacks up against the 38-72 which is a straight wall cartridge. Either one would add a lot of horse power to your rifle. www.reamerrentals.com has 38-56 reamers, Lee make the dies as a standard offering....no custom work needed. I wouldn't change a thing though if you are happy with the 38-55 right now and haven't completely wrung it out.

You guys are really just trying to drive me nuts aren't you? :shock: Not gonna change a thing till I get some more range time with it ,it's pleasent to shoot but if I can't make it work I sure aint afeared of changeing it. 8)

I got some .30-30 Basic brass I'll make you a deal on. It's a bit over 3" long. Buck a case is better than buck and a half a case.

So far all the problems I have are due to inexperiance I hope to remedy that soon. I've put a williams FP sight on it but haven't shot it yet (weathers just lovely) and I've had some of the same coke bottle loads not seating well, I think I'm gonna try a Lyman M die to see if that helps. other than that it shoots well. 8)
