what will you do with your guns when you pass on
« on: February 13, 2005, 01:09:05 PM »
If you leave or want to leave a special rifle to a son or daughter before or when you pass on in this world what would you do?  Would you engrave it?  If so, would you engrave the stock, receiver, or barrel?  Or would you just pass the guns on as they are, not engraved?

What will you do with your guns when you pass on?  Will you leave them all to your son?  Would you leave some to daughter's who do not like guns?

My son loves guns of all kinds and we hunt together.  My two daughters do not.  Both daughers want a gun tho when I go as a memory.  One has a grandson, but will he be raised anti gun.

I would not engrave anything, in case one of my heirs fell on hard times and had to sell it. You never know what will be a future collectors item, so why ruin the value? A nice handwritten note given with the gun should be just as good. As for daughters, sure, why not leave them one? As far as the grandson goes, well, lets just say kids don't always end up the same as they are raised.

Myself, I think I would want to be buried with my semi-autos, then the grand-kids will know where to get one if they are totally banned. :-D

The kids, wife and I have already sat down and decided who gets what.  All spelled out in the will and additions or corrections are done as needed.  I have seen too many instances were family members end up arguing over items not mentioned in a will.  Lawdog

I agree 100% with Lawdog. Put everything in writing where it is to go. I have two daughters; one who is easy to please and one who is a real bitch. There is sure to be a fight when I pass.  So to avoid that mess, I plan to put it all on paper.  That way it's all done as "I" say.

It is probably better to give what you can while you are still in this world. Wills can be contested, and often are. And reducing the size of the estate has tax benefits for some.

Of course, my kids/grandkids will get most. But I should mail a few to John Kerry with a lil surprise inside. Of course a note stating, "Ban this *****" accompanied by lights out. Take it as ya like  :) .  :D

I think it would be rather presumptous for me to have anything engraved.
Before I croak, I intend to give my son one high powered rifle, one .22 and a shotgun, his choice.   The rest, if I predecease my wife, will be converted into cash at auction to be used as she sees fit.
If my son wants more, let him pinch pennies, work overtime and do without lunch like I did.  I'm sure that will make him appreciate them more.

I told my wife that if there is one thing of mine that does not get sold it are my guns. If my kids didn't want them then their kids and so on. The most important "materialistic" thing I have are my guns.

My wife's grandfather left his guns to my two boys and when my older son passed away, they became the property of my surviving boy.  Unfortunately he never uses them, they just sit in a safe, so my guns will probably get sold by my wife before the grass grows on my grave.
Oh well, at least I'll enjoy them before I'm gone.

BTW one of the guns my son has is a Model 93 Marlin 30/30, purchased by my wife's grandfather for $18 in 1930.

I'll second that.

I have some guns that have been passed down or given to me by my dad that are absolutely priceless to me.  Those guns have sentimental value and must stay in the family and be passed down from generation to generation.

I also have guns that are recent purchases that don't any sentimental value to me.  When I die I would hope that my wife and kids would see the sentimental value in them by virtue of me passing and choose to keep them in the collection to be passed down.

Hold it guys!  Your talking like ya can't take them with you and there is no hunting in heaven.  I talked to Elvis the other day and he assured me there was some great whitetail hunting up there.

On the other side just in case I can't take them:  I am going to buy as many as I can for the two grandsons. Like a complete set: .22, shotgun with 2 barrels and a big game rifle.  Maybe they will be grandfathered in so to say if the laws change.

I want to be placed on my back, arms crossed, with my stag gripped Ruger .45 Colt in one hand and my 25-06 Sendero in the other. On my belt place my Fallkniven Wilderness Knife on one side and a Bark River camp axe on the other.

Then as they push the boat out onto the fiord set it on fire.

No need to go into the halls of Valhalla weaponless.

As far as my other tools and weapons, my kids and wife already know who gets what. Most of the stuff I bought with passing them on in mind.
