Factory Loads for .44 mag for deer and hogs
« on: January 29, 2005, 02:25:36 PM »
Howdy everyone. I'm getting a 44 mag soon and was wondering whats the best factory ammo for each one. I was thinking about Cor-Bon 180 grains JHP for deer and 250 grain Winchester Partition Gold for hogs. Are they suffieceint enough? I'm new to the handgun hunting so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If the 250gr Partitions shoot well in your gun than I'd suggest using them for both. It would be better to build a little confidence with one good load than to switch back and forth through too many.

However, for shooting whitetails nearly any 240gr HP bullet will do the job if shot placement is good.

A 180 gr JHP will work on whitetails on broadside lung shots, a 200 gr or 240 gr JHP will work on less than ideal shots also.  Can't help you from personal experience on the hogs, but I'd use my home cast 250 gr SWC or a 240 gr JSP or heavier bullet.

How about the Bruin ammo that's one of the sponsors for this site, anyone ever try it? I just ordered some and hope to try it on hogs in Texas come the end of Feb. will let all know how/if it works out.

I have four boxes of the Bruin ammo here I'm using for a Product Review. So far I've not shot much as the scope on the FA83 went south on me while I was shooting. Even so the groups at 25 yards were I think 1.1" and 1.5" or there about, no larger for sure. I've now replaced the scope and have to get back out and get at it. But my health has prevented it. Soon tho.

I'll say one thing for the Bruin ammo. They have the prettiest and most perfect looking bullets I've ever seen in any cast bullet load from any source. If good looks mean anything they sure should shoot well.

what ammunition to use

I reload a lot of ammunition for 45 acp 25-06 and 338-06. When I purchased my 44 Mag sri I was expecting to work up a load to hunt with.
I purchased a varity of ammunition and was not overly impressed with the accuracy. Until I tried AMERICAN EAGLE BRAND. I know its the least expensive ammunition I could buy. The result, I did not work up a load for 44 magnum.

My gun just loves it, very accurate and does an excellent job on Whitetail deer. I use JSP. How these would work on Hogs I can't say, we don't have hogs in South Dakota. I would reccomend you try as much ammunition as you can get hold of and take notes on how it shoots. Use and save the targets. You will find a brand and load that work well in you gun.

Remember in the end you have to pull the trigger and the bullet does the rest. Even if it is not the highest tech bullet leaving you barrel at near warp speed the deed will be done with good shot placement. There is no substitute for trigger time.

Ditto on the America Eagle Ammo (Federal budget ammo).   Their 240 grain hollowpoints shoot very accurately from my 10" scoped Contender and my 6 1/2" S&W.  They are definitly worth a try for the money.

If you want to use just one load for both deer and hogs, then I have to agree, get the Partition Gold.  They are accurate and perform well.

If you will be hunting larger hogs, then, while the 250 partition gold is great, you may want to consider stouter bullets like those offered by buffalo-bore.

I 2nd the vote on staying with the same grain weight for shooting uniformity.  I note that your from Georgia, fine state, brother lives in Forsythe.  Good times were had on Cumberland Island before the "Hired Professionals" cleared out all of the hogs.  Those Partitions should do a fine job for both.

The things I've learned about hogs are; 1. the boiler room is from the front leg forward, in the bottom 1/3 of the body 2. the boiler room is very small 3. the spine runs through the shoulder area much lower than many think 4. head shots offer virtually as much target as the boiler room , if I can't get a head shot, if possible, I'll wait until I can.

Deer are considered a thin skin animal, so 240 grn jhp should work well. Winchester (White box) is a good bet, also Mag-tech makes a good bullet. I prefer a jfp myself. At ranges out to 60-70 yds I see no reason for premium bullets for white tail.
