I am about as far north as anyone can get.  We have the most northern port in the United States that is ice free all winter in Valdez.

The fish are there and the limits on species like rockfish are more liberal.  The biggest problem in keeping the boat ice & snow free and weather.
You might make it out but not back if the weather turns. I really wish I could keep the boat in.  The other factor is the lay-out period by the insurance company.  I have to pull my boat Dec. 1st and can't put it back in until May 1st. unless I call them.

To me winter fishing is the best.
Nothing better than freezing everything off out there in feb; but hey it seems I have the whole ocean to myself.

We fish for ling, tog, stripers, and if we really feel adventeruos; we'll go way out and fish for cod.

Other species to be caught, but this is what we mainly go for.

probably the most consistent salmon fishing is in the winter, we call them winter springs[ spring salmon]They are not the big summer run fish, they only average around 6-12 lbs, but they tend to hang around, unlike the summer fish that are moving through towards the spawning grounds.The biggest challenge is the weather, but any calm day you can get out you are pretty well assured of fish

We can fish Puget Sound Year round and it is real good fishing in the winter because all the fair weather boaters are not in the way.   We just need to keep an eye on the weather and maybe stay in the more sheltered bays is all.

We fish year round in southern southeast alaska. Keep our boats in the water year round too if we want to. Fact is most commercial diving in this area takes place in the winter. Of course the weather can get really nasty that time of year.

We have winter kings and all kinds of bottom fishing available. Shrimping and crabbing is good too. Regards, Byron

How far out do you have to go to catch cod?  I'm going to be moving to NJ sometime this Spring and would like to buy a small 22 foot boat.  I don't like going out when it's rough - I like smooth seas or else I say home.
 
Still, how far do you have to go out to catch cod, and what time(s) of the year can you catch them?

I ask this because there is a party boat that is in Key West during the winter and then goes us to Mass. during the summer.  The boat is called the Yankee Capts and it goes out for 2 or 3 or more days at a time.  I think that they primarily catch tuna and cod during the summer.  Is that right?
