New Glock 26 owner-questions?
« on: April 03, 2004, 03:18:16 PM »
I picked up a slightly used Glock 26(my first Glock!) with night sights today to replace the bulky Ruger P95 that I intended to use for concealed carry. Reading all of the posts about Glocks going boom has me worried. Is this pistol safe for +P rounds? Are these night sights fixed or drift adjustable for windage. There is nothing in my literature about the night sights. Is there a web page where I can find out if my gun is affected by this recall?

I shot 50 rds today and really enjoyed the way it shot, but some of the negative posts regarding Glocks has me nervous,  hope I can continue to have a happy relationship with this gun!

Scott.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

+P's aren't going to hurt your Glock. Enjoy it.

Bloody good gun, used one as a carry gun for years.

Just get a good holster!

Have a 27 (the 40 cal. version of the 26).  I put the Pierce grip extensions on mine so I could get three fingers on the grip. Never had a problem and have shot just about everything in it. Enjoy your new toy.

Glocks are rated for +P even +P+. I shoot and carry both in my G19.

I picked up a used G26 for CCW. I also have a pre-ban G19. The G26 wil fire any of the rounds mentioned with no problems at all.
As for Glocks going boom, I have never heard of any of the 9mm models ever having any problems. Not for at least the last 10 years anyway.
Possibly some of the early models in the 80s, but nothing since that I'm aware of.

I have a G26 that was affected by the frame rail recall.  I suggest you call Glock to see if your gun is affected.  The frame on mine was replaced and returned in short order.

My G26 is what I carry every day and I think it is a great piece.

Regarding your sights, I think they are probably drift adjustable.

I had a G19 go kB!, and yes, it was an older preban model.  After repair, it has handled the next 1000+ rds of factory ammo okay, but I will never put a reload in it unless I upgrade to a fully supported chamber.
If you are concerned about this, try retracting the slide just enough to take it out of full lockup (say 1/16") and see if you can pull the trigger to fire it.  (It should go without saying that you first UNLOAD, and confirm you have and VISUALLY CONFIRM you have an empty chamber before trying this.]  The combination of it ability to fire out of full lockup, a less than fully supported chamber, and higher pressures or poor cases can sometimes result in blowing a hole in the rim of the case at the spot where it is not fully supported due to the feed ramp cut.  The people at Glock tech support tell me they have also had problems with some brands of ammunition.  She noted Federal.  I knew they had beefed up their 10mm cases due to this problem, but apparently they also had a problem with some 9mm loads.  I have not heard of the problem with newer Glocks, but owners of older models might want to call Glock and check and see if they need the upgrade kit.  See http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/upgrade-faq.html for details about this kit, and which s/ns need it.  It must be sent to and installed by a Glock armorer.  (Apologies if this info is already known here, this is my first post on this board.)

I carry my 27 when ever i'm not at work (22 at work)  100% reliable.  Don't shoot lead or load the wrong powder and you will be fine.

No flames CW, but I don't quite test any of my guns by throwing them 15 feet onto concrete and then exptect them to function perfectly.  I work them through more of my "real life" workouts, things that I fully expect to come into.  NOT abstract punishment tests.

The Gun Zone writer is one of the Glock haters out there.  Everything that I have seen from him is denigrating towards Glock.

All that I can say in defense of Glock is that mine has worked perfectly since I've owned it, and the 2-3 FTF's have been purely operator error, with one purposely done by severely limp wristing.  And my 36 digested 98% of its loads as coming from my reloading press, with the other 2% being factory.

I'm sure that no other pistol in history has ever had improvements done to it when a problem has been found in its operating system.

Like I said, no flames, sorry to hear of your KB!.  I just wish that I could hear of the 1911's that have blown, or misfired....

I've had a G26 for quite a while - like the recoil feel much better than my first Glock - a model 17 (still have it too).  Guess the double stack recoil spring pack has something to do with it.

By the way, I got my M17 in 1991 and put every kind of reload through you could imagine.  The first 6 months I had it, I put over 900 rounds through it - it was my first centerfire handgun.  My favorite load was CAST LEAD 147gr bullets & I bet I've shot well over 500 of them through mine.  Then I quit shooting them after all the horror stories about the problems lead bullets caused.  Guess the only reason I didn't was because I was using a big heavy slow bullet that wasn't going fast enough to lead the bore up.

Why?

Factory Glock barrels have a different type of rifling(hexagonal).  This type of rifling can lead quicker than standard rifling.  This can cause pressures to go above safe levels.  AFAIK, this applies to factory Glock barrels only.

Some like to replace their stock barrels with aftermarket barrels.  This allows them to shoot cheaper lead bullets w/out the above mentioned problems.  I might be leaving out something though, so don't take my reply as gospel or anything.

OBXPilgrim, hope I didn't step on your toes, since this question was directed to you. :D

I have shot literally thousands of rounds of lead ammo through my 26 and my 30, and have had no problem with leading. All have been my reloads under 1000 fps. Sounds like some creative marketing by barrel makers to me.

Excellent handgun, in fact my favorite. :D

I have put thousands of rounds through my G26 (backup gun) and my dept. G17.  Most of it was regular federal ammo (american eagle) but most everytime we qualify  we use our duty ammo which is +p+ (hydrashocks).

All officers at my pd are required to carry dept G17's and we have not had a "kaboom" .

Glocks have a great finish.
