Well Ishoot a Ruger 338 and also travel your state( never hunted yet) It is my favorite rifle. Now I don't have the low weight  model as you have ordered. I shoot mine for varmints on up in th elower states. I had to have a muzzel brake put on as at the range over and bags it will cause some tears. when I start to work up some new loads. It is a great rifle and you will be happy.

Sask_Hunter:

My brother has one in stainless/synthetic, it is a real shooter. I told him if he ever wants to get rid of it to let me know first. Recoil isn't bad at all in a standing position but like Jim said, it will pound you from a bench!

I have a Ruger .338 that I bought back in the mid 80s, its blue the original wood stock was stright and really pounded me.  I changed it to a cheap Ramline and that really tamed it.  I worked up a good hot load for hunting here in Alaska using a 225gr bullet.  I can reach out and touch things out to 500 yards real nice.  My wife gave me a New Stainless Steel Ruger .338 last year for Fathers day.  I finally got a good scope and took it out to shoot. I figured the same loads for my other .338 would be fine, Boy was I wrong.  First shot I really got pounded hard, I looked at the case and saw the bolt face imprinted on the case head.  Metal had flowed into the extractor hole.  I realised that I had a high pressure problem with this gun and those loads.  I finally got a good load by dropping 2 full grains of powder.  The velocity and range are not the same though.  I'm sticking with my old blue .338 for all my Moose and Grizzly hunting.
You can be under gunned, But never over gunned.
