You can load it.Speer makes the capsuls and plugs fill with your own shot and load to about 1200fps for best  pattern. I have a box of 20 I loaded up for when I was picking blackberries in early summer. Make great snake charmers. don't expect much past 15 feet. I use #9 shot as I don't want it to carry far.

I have some CCI shotshells for my 45 colt.  They're using #6 shot I believe.  No snake has a chance against it if he's close enough to worry me.

I had some factory CCI shot loads,  in 44 mag, not sure what size but i think 9 shot.  I found a  blue grouse and proceded to shoot him 5 times from around 15 feet.  I finally had to chase him down and ring his neck.  The long and short of it was I wasn't very impressed.

When I skinned him I found lots of shot just under the skin but no penetration.  (It managed to break one of his wings out near the tip so he couldn't fly well enough to escape me when i decided to catch him.

I had some 22 shotshells when I was a kid and all they did was lead the barrel.  I think they were #12 shot.   They were the kind with the crimped end instead of the plastic capsule.  I shot a bird perched on a limb 10' directly over my head and he just squalked and flew away.
44Mag with #6 should be fine for at-your-feet snake medicine.

There's a big discussion about this over at http://www.aimoo.com/forum/postview.cfm?id=514616&CategoryID=228143&startcat=1&ThreadID=1907295

They are using .444 brass in .410 and there has been a mention or two of the .45-70. I just don't think you can get enough shot into pistol brass even with the help of a capsule.

Some time back I hanloaded some 45-70 brass with bird shot.  I got better results/patterns shooting bird shot loads from my 4" barreled Ruger 357 with factory shot shells than the 45-70.  I think the rifling spun them too much in the rifle.  It was my BC by the way.

I've used those .22 birdshot with the crimped end.  In my .22 rifle they killed snakes well at about 6' from the barrel to the snake.  I also used it to kill rats.  I would put the barrel right next to their head, did what I wanted killed them with little noise.  If I shot them from 8 to 10 feet they ran off.  Don't know if it killed them or not.  The wife put them in her .22 revolver for snakes.  She tried to shoot one at 10 feet, in front of a stump, the shot bounced back and hit us in the face.  No damage, it did not even sting, just felt like several flies or something brushed my face.  Now the .44 shotshells work a little better with #6 shot.  I have killed grouse with them.  But killing a spruce grouse is not hard.  Just walk to within 6' of him, lean toward him, and shoot with the barrel about 3 feet from his head.  Does a real good job, but leads the barrel bad.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
