Since I have a supply of small pieces of 1144SP, I took a piece (1.75" dia x 4" long) and bored a 1" hole 3" deep. Then took a 3/4" diameter piece, cut a 3/4 groove inthe base and welded it in place.  Next is a 1" mould of a couple of short pieces.  (The copper coupling for 3/4" tubing is just under 1' in diameter.)

Golf ball mortar (2.00" OD) is shown for scale along with a 2x4.

I might have to try something like that.  I have a 1" ball end mill that would make a nice ball mold.  Nice work!

The 1" ball-end-mill cuts smooth but takes special care in centering it.  
I haven't got one done enough to try casting with it yet.

What range do you get and what loads?

that I made at the time.  The other was plain steel, painted black on an oak mount with handles on the elevation screw.  It was a Christmas present to a female acquaintance (who has since developed into a staunch anti-gun leftist) a number of years back.

My recollection is the welding class instructor did the welding but used a much oversize bead.  Well applied but more than needed for the size and loading characteristics.

I have 1" ball bearings for shot but have never fired it.  Overall diameter is 2" so it would take a pretty stout charge.  But I can't imagine more than 50 grains of FFg if you wanted to find the shot.  I have a small bronze mortar that shoots 2 lb spherical sinkers (2 5/32" dia) to 600 yards on a half ounce of Fg.

Ball bearings are such a cool idea for the small mortars!


Almost done with the 1" confederate style:

L-R:  Golf-ball and Fuji-Film-Canister Caliber hand held's and 1" (3/4" copper tubing coupling caliber).

Need to do the flat trunion caps and a few bolts and handles.

I was shocked - this was MY FIRST direct application of having to square that block with a plane (learned in Jr. High School).

Hmmmm.  Air currently.  Since  I haven't fired it yet it's all theory.  But I've been thinking of filling the top half with lead.  Concrete is another real option.
