Anyone hunting Hogs in North Alabama.

This very slow Deer season has already got me thinking of hunting hogs when it closes.
Me and my friend have both turned to Handgun hunting this year and would like to find a place to hog hunt sometime this year.

Any suggestions to where we should start.

I have wanted to try hogs for a few years myself, I'll have to look into Bankhead. Been trying to get my B-I-L to take me and my son to Marengo Co. to his company's club on the river, He says they are covered up with hogs on some parts of the land.

I have been handgun hunting for a few years, Just got a FA 97 last week. Now I am waiting on a taller front sight and to get some practice in with it. It is allot smaller than the Bisley Blackhawk I have been using for the last few years.

Ive walked all over Bankhead for years scaring turkeys and have never noticed hogs or hog signs. That dont mean I wasnt standing in the middle of a hog wallow and didnt know it.
Maybe I'll talk to Mr. Warden and see if he has any good info. The guy in charge is full of great info on hunting the Management area if you can get him in a mood to talk, Its kinda hit and miss.

tspoon what did you buy. Havent bought from Byford for a couple of years. Been going to Larry's in Huntsville. My wife uncle working there now and I seem to get a pretty good deal from him. Mr byford just want budge an inch when I want him too.

davis1as, Have you ever hunted the TVA land on 36west at the flint creek area. Behind the power station? I havent seen any of the hogs but they are there. I hunt down there sometimes. The ground looks like a tiller tore it up. I couldnt believe they could tear up the ground that bad. I didnt realize what it was until i ran into some rabbit hunters out there. They asked me if i had seen any hogs. I squirrel hunt out there. Also had 2 bucks walk up on me last year 3 days before gun season. There is a gate up now to keep people with 4-wheelers out.

When your headed West out of Hartselle you cross the flint creek bridge. Right past it is a power sub station on your left. You can park behind the substation or beside it. There is a drive beside it. Theres a field directly behind the substation. All the wooded land that borders the field all the way down to the creek and powerline is TVA land. Theres a 4 wheeler trail that probably goes for about 3/4 of a mile down through there. Its hardwoods and bottom land. Sometimes it floods in the bottoms but theres plenty of squirrel. Ive seen several bucks down there. I dont deer hunt much. TVA has the right of way on Flint creek. It extends from Vaughn bridge rd, over to 36 over to nanceford and Barkely bridge. I dont hog hunt but if you do you should scout it out. The 36 area is the only place ive seen hog sign and deer. The signs i saw were about the 3/4 mile spot. Just follow the trail for a good ways. The only private land is the field that borders it.

There are a lot of hogs on the Oakmulgee WMA, but of course there are a lot of restrictions about how you can hunt them.  We have seen a lot of hogs while squirrel and deer hunting and have killed a few.  I have aslo heard that people run dogs for hogs in the National forest around the WMA.

You dont have to have a permit. 4-wheelers arent allowed. As far as maps you can look up TVA on the internet and find info on the wheeler resevoir. The best way is ask the warden or someone who knows. I had them send me a map but it doesnt show all the areas. Its mainly a tourist looking map. A lot of the land is marked by some type of sign.

I sent an email to their Land managment Dept. and asked about public access to hunting land and about maps, we'll see if they respond.

Hello Reyn, it's Phil (RFC phil).  How good is the squirrel hunting on this TVA land up there in Morgan County??  I've got to find somewhere different to go, the land I have been hunting on that the state owns northeast of Hwy. 67 at New Harmony community is just absolutely devoid of squirrels lately.  I have now hunted there 8 times since the first of December, and seen not a stinking ONE.  I went to Swan Creek looking for squirrels back in November and got a few, but I hate to drive that far from Hanceville.  I wish I could still hunt Bowater and Grief Bros. lands, but all gone now.

Phil, hows it going. The squirrel huntings pretty good on TVA. Here lately it seems dead everywhere. One place you need to try is the Wheeler Wildlife refuge. I hunt there a lot but it has a seperate season. Oct1-4, then from Feb 10-28. It doesnt get a lot of pressure because its not open that much and there is plenty of hardwoods. You can PM me at RFC if you need some more info. It opens back up this Thursday.

Howdy, I've been registered for some time now but I had only been lurking until I spotted this post.

FWIW, I live in N. Cullman County.

I used to work in the Hartselle area and my job sometimes took me over into the eastern part of Lawrence County.  If you'll go out Hwy 36 past Danville school to the next road to the left (CR 201?) go across Hwy 157, you should be able to find some "Hog Country"  in that part of the world.  I have heard them before in the area of Friendship Baptist Church.  All of that land will be private so you'll need the landowners permission.

In the many years I've know Byford's, I've only been able to buy 1 gun from them.  Lately I've been buying my new stuff from Southeastern Guns in Trussville.

Rick, you ever tried Larrys pistol and pawn in Huntsville? They have better prices than most.

I don't buy many guns, but when do, I shop for the best price.  Southeastern Guns has always beaten Larry's for me.

Y'all might check with Dennis at Wilborn Outdoors in Cullman.  I think he's done some Hog hunting in the Bankhead area.

You know you're a gun nut when you have the #s of your favorite dealers pre-programmed into your cell phone

Southeastern Guns # is 250-661-1486.

For the most part, the price you see if what you'll pay.  SEG is located on Hwy 11 in Trussville.  Their sales tax is only 5% and that really helps on a large purchase.  I do not now, nor have I ever worked for them.

I no longer hunt, but if I did (deer hunting) it would probably be in Limestone County.  For small game, it would be here in Cullman on the old farm where I grew up.  For Hogs, it would be in Lawrence or Winston Counties or somewhere down south.

Speaking of Hogs, how do you guys hunt them?  Get up in a tree and hope for the best, chase them down with dogs?  I think I would want to be in a tall tree and let the dogs bring them to me.  For a gun, I would want the biggest, badest thing in the collection.

My wife & I ate lunch at Paul's one day last week,,,,,pretty good groceries!

where we go we just stalk them down and find them then shoot.
in the afternoon we sit over a green field or a good wallow
