Tested some .22LR
« on: April 29, 2005, 07:23:18 PM »
Well like many of you guys/gals, I love my .22LR. I have bigger CALS. but, some days I just feel like getting out the little plinkers.

Well, today I went out with a buddy of mine and we tested a bunch of types of .22LR. Here is what I found I liked and did not like.

I do alot of small game hunting and yote hunting and I like to use .22LR, so Im always looking for a better round. I found the CCI stuff to be the best for range and small game.

*Here is what I really liked*

I liked the CCI "VELOCITOR" the most. Close second was CCI "STINGER", although I found that the stingers have a higher FPS, I like the shock of the SPEER gold dot velocitors. I was also really happy with the CCI "MINI MAG" 0030(FMJ) and the 0031(HP). Tied for third was the CCI "SGB"(small game bullet).

As far as .22LR in bulk packs. I liked the REMINGTON golden pack hp, 550 rounders and the REMINGTON 250 round packs in high vel. FMJ.

*As far as what I did not like*

I was not very happy with the REMINGTON "sub sonics". We had three types of guns in the field with us and had feed issues with all of them, with the sub sonic rounds. I also was not happy with the FED. 500 pack of FMJ rounds. I just did not like there grouping past 50 yards with the rifle and 15 yards with the pistols.

*What Im not sure about*

There was only one round I was unsure about and Im looking into testing more. It was the CCI "GREEN TAG". I started to like it, then I started to not like it. I was back and forth on it all day.

What do you guys think? Is there any I should add to my like/dont like list? What do you guys like to plink, target and hunt with in .22LR?

I was using a Marlin semi auto rifle, a Walther P22 pistol and a Ruger MKIII pistol.

HouseofCash:

In my:
Contender...Velocitors.
Ruger Mark II Comp...Wolfe, Fed Match & Win T22.
S&W 22A...Rem Subsonics & CCI Green.
Ruger Mk4...Blazers.
Pardini...Wolfe & Aquila Match Pistol.

Seems like I could settle on one or two types...but each seems well suited for a particular pistol.  About the only rounds I have given-up on are the Fed Bulk ammo.  I just can't seem to get this ammo to cycle through my handguns...and I can't seem to get that squib out of my mind.

CCI Blazers, Federal Lightnings and Federal value pack.  Winchester Dynapoints are well spoken of, but I haven't tried them yet.  I've tried just about eveything else and I've found that the three I mentioned give the best bang for the buck.

I have learned that it is best to keep an open mind though, because sometimes things change.  There was a time when I wouldn't touch Blazers, but they have changed.  Once in a while I get a box of Lightnings that have a number of duds, but often that has to do with which gun I use
them in.
