A question here for those among you knowledgeable about such things...

I have a Winchester 94AE XTR lever action carbine in .30-30. Its a Ducks Unlimited dinner gun, '86 or '87 i think. Incredible wood, full engraving on a french-gray reveiver... all in all very nice. It has sat in my safe since them and i have done absolutley nothing with it.

I have always wanted a lever-gun in .357 mag. Is it possible to rebarrel using a factory .357 mag barrel? That way i keep my incredible wood, nicely engraved gun, and in a caliber i am more likely to use. Will this require extensive modification of the inner workings/action/etc? Any thoughts as to whether this is feasible?

I've never done it.  (Put that up front so you know I'm guessing)
But I figure the Bolt, the barrel, the cartridge lifter, the cartridge guides will all be different. The tube mag may have some difference, but I'm not sure what. The catridge stop for a 30-30 wouldn't work for a 38 without some changes IMO.

Just my humble opinion. Don't do it. You will ruin the collector value of the gun. I have no idea what it is worth but it has to be more than a regular run rifle. If you want a .357 that bad get one or sell the XTR. I have an XTR 94AE in 30/30 and it's staying with me.
