Smith 686 or the new 620?

Looking for a 4" 357 for woods, fishing, truck, and house gun. Decided on a Smith, but can't tell much difference in these two (686 vs 620) other than 6 rounds vs. 7. Which would you all choose?

If it where me I would get a 686, a slightly older one with the firing pin in hammer.  This will also ensure that you will not be getting the dreaded frame lock.

In my neck of the woods this should cost about $400.00.

Another option is a s/w model 66.  This is the k frame version of .357 and is also a very nice gun.  The model 620 is the blending of the model 686 and 66 creating an L frame gun with the K frame profile.

What year did they take the firing pin off the hammer on 686?

What's frame lock?

I believe the change went into effect with the 686-5, in 1998.

The frame lock is the small lock just above the cylinder release latch.
