Another 45-70 Question
« on: February 21, 2005, 09:41:31 AM »
I have pretty much decided on buying a Handi .45-70, but I have read that there are some loads that should not be put in certain guns. My question: Is the factory ammo, i.e. Wal-Mart, gonna be ok shooting out of a handi-rifle? What grain load should I stay away from if I use my handi rifle if Im hunting big boars, bears and so on? Thanks, Justin

The standard load which you will find at most store is the 300 grain bullet hollow point made by Winchester,Remington and others. This load will do really fine in your handi for most all hunting purposes.
The so called level 3 loads(very hot) are not recommended.
You are gonna love the 45/70.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

For the best terminal performance in a factory load I'd recommend the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 300gr nosler load, it's velocity of 1880fps is well within the Handi's capabilities. As far as I know, there are no level 3 factory loads available, the hotest loads are from Buffalo Bore, Corbon and Garrett which are all designed for Marlin lever guns at level 2 of which the Handi is capable of.

ya mean walmart has 45/70 ammo?
I was wondering if a handi would handle bb, corbon or garrett loads
as well as a marlin does.

It will handle them fine. One exception might be the 500 grain which may or may not be to long. They would not however be to hot.
shot placement is everything.

Freezesucka04:
You will find that commonly available factory ammo is fine in the Handi. The concern about modern loads probably came from the idea of using them in very old rifles that were really meant to be loaded with black powder. The stuff you can get from Wallmart is what everyone is using.
Quick is tellin you right. The biggest problem you'll have using factory ammo is removing the big, happy grin!      Woodbutcher
