MOUTH CALLS???
« on: March 03, 2005, 01:18:25 AM »
In  the past few years I have had really good luck with box and slate type friction calls....but have had several birds hang up just out of gun range, but close enough to see me if i make a move to call.

So i have been playing around with a mouth call....and gettin pretty good cluck and yelp tones.

My question is; What mouth call do you guys think is best? and, Which one would be good for a beginner?

Thanks
TCB

Generally speaking, the single reed calls are the easiest for the beginner.  I am not much past beginner when it comes to mouth calls but I much prefer the sound of the trip and quad reed calls.  Knight and Hale makes a great assortment and they have a 4 pack that Wal-Mart sells that is really a good choice.

After a few years of experimenting, I've finally settled on one mouth call - the Knight and Hale Viper 3. It's loud and raspy. It's kind of nice not to have to try mouth calls anymore. I know which one I'm going to buy when I go into the store. Give it a try.

Thanks for the replys!!
Looks like Knight & Hale is at the top of most everybodys list.
My local Wal-mart sells multi packs by most all the top call makers...I think that they have 2 K&H packs.....If neither has the viper 3 then Ill buy it seperate.

Spring Gobbler opens here on the second sat. in April.....Im like a kid waiting for Christmas...again this year!!!

Thanks again!!

Today was opening morning at the local WMA, and no call was working. My daughter and I got there about 4:45 AM, and it was like a parking garage. I've never seen so many people in this area before. There were people yelling, truck doors slamming, motors reving up....and when we went through the check station at 1:00 PM (the end of legal shoooting time), there was a total of one turkey taken today. Go figure. Hopefully all the guys who go hunting once a year as an excuse to get drunk got it out of their system today. We'll be out tomarrow morning again.

Man!!  sounds like some serious hunting pressure.
I dont think that we have that many turkey hunters up here.....and after the first week most of them (well except ME) are burnt out....By the second week of the season....I start to feel like the sole surviver.

Its great thet you are getting your daughter involved.
I cant think of a better way to spent time with them.

Good luck...and...keep us posted!
