700VSF in 308
« on: February 20, 2005, 11:50:20 PM »
Just got one yesterday! It will be awhile before I get to shot it though. I need to start saving again for a scope.
I'm going with light weight alum. rings and bases, target scope (Weaver, Leupold or Sightron) and Jewell trigger.
Main functon will be HP Rifle Silhouette (if it can make weight), but may try some 1000yd. BR or other types of competitions.
Any experience, or opinions on the 700VSF?

I am looking at getting a 700 VSF left handed in 308 win for target shooting and deerhunting.   I have a couple questions if you don't mind.   How tall are you and how does the stock fit?   The reason is that I am 6foot 4 inches tall and was wondering about how the stock would fit me (other than needing to maybe add a 1 inch recoil pad to it for longer LOP)

Thanks

mcooper, I am 5'10" and 185lbs. I really don't know how it will work out for me yet. I haven't mounted a scope on it or really handled it at all. It's just sitting there waiting.

Leadlum, A few years back I had a 700PSS in 308 and with my handloads it would sometimes shot in the .3's @ 200yds. I only hope this one is near that accurate.

Thanks, Bill

I love mine!!!! I had to have it rebarreled I shot it so much!!! Shoot 168's at every thing and 190's at 500 meter rams. Canjar trigger... Premier Leupold... kwick sight see through rings to raise the scope up abit.
You bed it and put a recoil pad on it, you will love the way it shoots!!!
Enjoy

jimann,
I was thinking of using 168's for rams, and a lighter bullet for CPT's.
You mentioned bedding. They come bedded. Did you have it rebedded?
Also, is the recoil pad just glued on? Is replacing it as simple as regluing another in it's place?

Thank, Bill

I do not have any new 700's I have bedded or had bedded all of them from the rear stock screw to in front of the recoil lug maybe one inch.
Recoil pads are flat on the bottom and the butt has a curve, so it is necessary to grind some of the stock. The pad also adds length so sometimes you need to cut off a chunk of stock.  Depending on your size length of pull is from the bend of your trigger finger to the bend of your elbow.
168's I love them!!!! But ringing rams is not fun.  A stand that leans forward or if the wind is coming from behind they get tougher!!!! I have rang rams with 190's. But I also have knocked them over with 6.5mm 140's.  Basically if they work shoot'em.
