Can the nef 45/70 safely use the 500gr hornandy bullet, the data I have shows it in front of 53.1gr of IMR 3031 at 50,000 cup to be used in the ruger #1 will it work in the nef or will it be a one time only thing. :grin:

You can probably get away with it one time, but I'm pretty sure that any extended shooting at all will streach the frame. Some time back a fellow reported rechambering a Handi to 300 Win Mag, and streaching the frame with 30 rounds or so. I don't think any gain from such a load would be any more useful in the real world than a 500 grain load that is only producing 30,000-40,000 psi. It is either Garret or Buffalo Bore that loads a 500 grainer to 1600 fps that is safe for use in the Handi. Look through the manuals some more, I'm sure there is a 40,000psi load that will do what you want.

I queried Hornady about the same subject, they thought that the bullet would not be effective loaded at velocities capable of in the Handi within safe pressures. I ended up selling the box of bullets I bought for the project. The Handi is capable of the same loads at those level 2 loads for the 1895 Marlin. The loads listed for the Handi and Marlin at Buffalo Bore are pretty much maximums....

It's funny, Buffalo Bore is pushing the 45-70 harder than the 450 Marlin with the same bullet... It's a wonder the 450 still exists in a factory rifle.

It's a wonder to me that they even came out with the .450. It seems like the answer to a question nobody ever asked in the first place.

The heavy duty Garret loads were out before the .450 was. Marlin should have known what was out there.

There was a great article in Rifle Magazine a few months ago about Brian Pearce using a Marlin .45-70 in Africa on Cape Buffalo. I don't think the .450 could do what he did with the old .45-70.

I don't think the chamber is long enough to use the 500gr Hornady in a 45/70 Handi-Rifle without SERIOUSLY reducing the powder space....the bullet hits the rifling & the action will not close.
In my handi-rifle, there is NO WAY I can use the cannelure in this bullet, it has to be seated about a full 1/4 inch deeper & is not worth doing.

This is true with most jacketed bullets, but try a bore-riding cast, and you are in a whole nother world :wink:

I tried it in the old H&R Shikari a long time ago. No expansion but 48+ inches penetration in a hard dirt bank. You could have reloaded the slug.

I am aware of the "bore-riding" styles of cast bullets one could do this with, however, the question centered around the 500gr Hornady jacketed bullet.
