Howdy,

Need some feedback on the various coatings they are using on bullets now days. About a year ago, I decided to give moly coated bullets a try in a new 22-250 - and would only shoot the moly bullets in that rifle. Here are my questions: First, if I decide to shoot non coated bullets in the rifle, is there any special barrel cleaning that needs to be done or can you go from coated to non coated?

Second, the new proprietary coatings that are coming out on many hunting rounds, the same as the applied moly or is it a similar but a different compound ? Also, are these new factory coatings replacing moly.

Hard to keep up with technology changing almost daily in this sport.

I did the same thing with my Colt 6742 AR when I bought it. I used NOTHING but moly coated bullets for a couple of years then the "experts" changed direction and started reporting possible"major" problems with build-up. So I quit using them. I didn't do any special procedure to get the gun changed over to traditional plated bullets and I never really saw any difference in the gun's accuracy. It shoots just as good with one as it ever did with the other (and that's pretty darn good, I'll tell ya).

I've moly coated everything from normal jacketed lead hunting bullets, Barnes X bullets, to many of my cast bullets. Here is what I have noticed. On cast bullets, I applied the Ms Moly aerosol over dried Lee Alox lube. I have had NO LEAD FOULING problems doing this, and have noticed no moly buildup in my handguns or rifles... On the Barnes X, the Ms Moly DID reduce the copper fouling, but in some cases it changed accuracy enough that I needed to rework the loads from the ground up... I'm sort of neither here, nor there as to how I feel about Moly coating, but I do know that it was once the big thing, and now, due to reported buildup problems, has fallen from grace.... :|

Opps. I missed part of your question. The "other" coatings found on bullets such as Barnes bullets etc. are reported to be "different" than moly... Now, I will not name names, but I know one famous person pretty well who is in the bullet making business and all I can get out of him is that their coating IS NOT moly... (molybdenum disulfide)
