Looking for suggestions near Dallas
« on: July 30, 2004, 03:56:39 AM »
Hey folks, I travel frequently to Texas and often visit Dallas and surrounding areas. I archery hunt mostly for hogs and I am looking for a specific opportunity and hunt in the Dallas area or within an hour or two maximum.

I would like to find someplace that has archery platform stands with feeders in the 15-35 yard range. I don't care if it's high fenced or not because there is no real difference when hunting alone in an elevated stand. The hogs will either be there or not and you still have to make the shot.

Now I need a bunk house or reasonably close motel to the hunting area. I Also need a place to freeze the meat for the trip back to the Seattle area.  I would much prefer to have the whole carcass ground into burger and then frozen. Ground meat frozen solid in one to two pound packages, packs far better into a cooler for the trip home then cuts of meat do.

Anyone knowing of a place with enough success to make it worth dragging my gear down. To hunt for two days or so with the above set-up please share the info!

Not an hour out of dallas at Tennesee colony on the trinity river is two places that are sure enough good. One is the Bigwoods and the other is Boar Creek Ranch. They take lots of good hogs and some truly large ones. You can look them up on the internet. Or can get phone numbers out of the TX Trophy Hunter mag.

PM didnt show up, havent had one in a while. Would be interested, got to wait until I get some of the money that I have out on some of these other guns that I have sold on auction right now. Should have it back by the end of the week. I still have the hornet and a MKII target 10" for sale.

If you can sell them by the weekend go for it, if you still have them at the end of the week I will take them.

Thanks guys, the "Boar Creek Ranch" in Cayuga sounds about the best deal right now. 90 miles south of Dallas. Everything but meat processing and they have a place in Dallas called Flagg Company that does custom butchering and Itialian Sausage which is what I wanted anyway. I will likely try this place in September and then look for another place in November when I go back again. Unless of course the hunting is so good I visit there again.

woops, thought it was a little closer than that, but still less than a hour and a half. I know one of the guides at the bigwoods and they have some great deer as well as hog. Either one ought to give you a good hog hunt. have fun.

I concur on Boar Creek Ranch http://www.boarcreek.com/. I took a nice boar there in October and I'm going back in February with a couple friends.

Kelly and Nick are good folks.

Don't overlook http://www.bowsafari.com  near Coalgate Oklahoma.

Calvin and Deanna are great people, the facility is first class and the animals are there and healthy.  It is bow only and the prices are very reasonable.  Easily inside two hours from Dallas.

Up US 69/75 out of Dallas and exit to Coalgate.

Good luck if you go there!

Mike

I have found another place near Dallas. It is Reed Ranch (http://www.reedfamilyranch.com/hogvarmint.html). They only do hog hunts when it's not deer season and they are conducted monthly.

It's different than Boar Creek Ranch, but I enjoyed the weekend very much and got my boar. It's rustic and more of a family style, laid back place.

Both are run by nice people that make you feel welcome and comfortable.
