Barrel Lug question
« on: February 22, 2005, 02:16:03 PM »
I have heard that the barrel lugs can come off the barrel...do they do this under normal use or isn't it a very common thing? I have 3 NEF guns and never had one but i read at a lot of places that they come off soemtimes, just wondering if this is a common thing or something not to worry about...thanks!

Don't think I've ever heard of the underlug having a problem, but I have read about the forend stud coming loose, which isn't really catastrophic, just allows the barrel to come off when the release is hit.

I agree with Quick, all the "lugs" I have heard of coming of have been the lugs/studs that hold on the forearms. A pain but not dangerous in any way....<><....

I actually tried to take one off a long time ago. ...took me one hour with an acetylene torch and a 3 lb hammer; and this was the old "brazed-on" lug.

What i am talking about is the thing that the forearm thing has the screw hole and the screw, screws into, the part thats on the barrel....this is what i was wondering if it comes off under normal use or if it isn't something to worry about?

It's not anything to worry about. It may have come off a couple of barrels out of the couple of hundred thousand barrels out there, but that frequency and the fact it is not a safety issue means you should not be concerned about it. The great, great majority of us will only read of it and never see it or know anyone it has happened to, sort of the worry of a hubcap falling off our car while we are driving down the road, has it happened to people, yes, will it happen to us, probably not, will it hurt us, no....<><....

I would not worry about it.  Even if it did come off the only thing that would happen is the gun might jump when the forearm came off.  Also the gun barrel will come off when you open the action, if you do them like I do.  I just hit the button and shake the gun to snap it open, with out holding the forearm or barrel.

If you're really worried about it you could box them all up and send them down here to Florida where this warmer climate would be kinder to the metal and the welds instead of the vile freezing temperatures you have up there.

MIdeerhunter, I hear it gets cold in your neck of the woods but I have been coyote hunting in Maine at 26 below with 30-35 mph winds with my Handi's and I have never had a forearm lug come off, and even if it did about all that would happen is my hand would have probably frozen to the barrel!!! So don't worry about it, you have about as good a chance of getting hit with "blue ice" from a passing jet!!!....<><.... :-D

just in case you are still worried ( ) and your guns are used to the cold weather, you could send them to me, I promise to care for them as my own!!!... :D
