SF rat season is closed except for incidental catches in bvr traps... Also it is illegal to disturb a rat house in Wisconsin. You could cut holes next to rat house and put potatoe or carrots down on pole and if they are eaten off when you check a day or three later , you will know there are rats around the huts. ANother thing is as soon as ice melts and there are open spots the rats will come out and sit on edges of ice next to open water by huts...

If you can keep an eye on them over the summer look for any changes to them, any repairs to them, increase in size. Also if there are no floating bogs or mounds seeif they are climbing on them to feed.

Most of the rat huts in my area are gone by late spring, or bening used by nesting waterfowl. That doesn't mean the rats are gone, but they just don't use huts year round. Look for new huts to appear in mid October.
