I see Barnes sells 400gr semi-spitzer bullets for the 45/70 has anyone used these in the handi and does anyone else make semi spitzer or spitzer bullets in .458 that could be used in the 45/70

I was looking at those same bullets about 15 minutes ago wondering the same thing. I think midway offers some cast semi spitzers. But i'm not sure if any one has used either of them.

Before buying those expensive bullets, I would email Barnes to find out the effective velocity as far as terminal effects on large game. A lot of those .458 bullets are designed for the other .458 big bores at much higher velocity and pressures than the 45-70 H&R rifles are capable of and won't expand at lower velocities. In other words, they are for level 3 loads instead of the level 2 loads for the H&R rifles.

Lee has started offering a 459-500-3R mould that is stirring up some interest. It's effectively a spitzer. Ballistic coefficient is given as .443. Since the mould is only about $13, it's well worth a try to anyone interested.

I've posted this before, but now's a good time to do it again.  I used the Barnes 300 gr semi-spitzers several years ago to shoot 3 deer.  The starting velocity was 2173 fps.  The 3 were shot at ranges from 10 feet to around 35 yds.  The only one that expanded was the one that hit that 6-point buck from above at 10 feet. In that case it hit the backbone and the deer died pretty much instantly.  In the second case, a doe at 35 yds, the bullet hit ribs going in and out and never expanded; she needed a mercy shot.  The 3rd instance was another doe at about the same range.  The bullet hit low near the liver and never expanded again.  No bone was hit.  Another mercy shot.  I believe, without going over there, that Midway(Barnes) states that a velocity of 2400 fps is necessary for this bullet; and I can safely say that once it gets below the starting velocity of my load it's no longer reliable.  Pity, it was the most accurate bullet I ever shot in the 45/70.  The one guy I know who still uses that 300 gr, shoots a 460 Weatherby, and "downloads" the bullet to 2600 fps.

I've used the Barnes Original 400 gn spitzer and flat points. The spitzer doesn't expand very well; the flat point works great at .45-70 velocities.

Joel were you possibly using the 300 grain X bullet spitzer? because they are not for the 45/70. Barnes makes 13 or more bullets in .458 but only 5 are listed for the 45/70 and two of them are semi-spitzers the 300 and 400 grain  but thease are all barnes Originals  The x bullets are for 458 win mag  Lott ect.

Nope, I was using the Barnes original 300 gr semi-spitzers.  The X-bullets were just then coming out in certain calibers.  I still have a couple left(originals)just sittin' around.

I wonder then if velocity was to high for  those bullets , i would like to hear from someone using the same bullet  starting at the same velocitys but taking deer at 150 to 200 yds. The velocity would probibly be around 1400-1500 at those ranges. I cant see needing velocitys at 2400 fps as the 45/70 wont get there.

A:  When I was using it(the 300 gr semi-spitzer) it wasn't recommended specifically for the 45/70; they only listed a recommended velocity.  Since they make the danged things, I suspect they know what is needed.

B: 63 gr of Reloader 7/ 300 gr jacketed bullet/2405 fps/pressure = 30,400 CUP.  I fired two of the five I loaded(not with the Barnes) and pulled the other three.  Recoil was way beyond my pain threshold.  The load is listed in Lyman's 46th edition under 45/70 loads for Ruger etc.

When i get my handi rifle in a few days I have got to get myself a barnes reloading manual., and a box of these 300 grain semi-spitzers . I have a chrony so i will try to load these 2100-2200 fps. I have a friend who has invited me to shoot deer between march and september  under several  nuisance permits on a tree farm in Dutchess county NY.  I have hunted there before the range is exactly120 yds. If i get the chance to do this i will post the results. Thanks Joel for your input on this
