Marlin 60 jams with Remington bullets
« on: April 05, 2004, 03:33:19 AM »
Anyone have any advice about a problem I'm have with my Marlin (Glenfield) 60.

I had a box of Remington Golden .22LR 36 gn. hollow point bullets.
After 5 or 6 shots the bullet would get caught between the bolts and the barrel.  Occasionally I can get though all 14 shots without any problems.
I took the gun completely apart and clean all the gunk and oil off.
Then used Remingtons Drylube, but it still would jam.

I don't think it was the bullets. Because I used them in a Nylon 66 and had no problems.  But I must admit, the bullets were old.  How old? I don't exactly know.

Do you think it might be the spring in the tube?
Or Maybe I should change brand of bullets.

I finished the box off and bought a box CCI's standard and Mini-Mag HV.
Looking forward to see how these work out.

What do you think about Winchester's .22LR bullets?

thanks,
skunkie

You are correct in your assesment of the problem, try changing bullets, some guns like one brand/style better than others....<><....

Yup Skunkie...
Try changing ammo, that may very well be the answer. If the jams continue, try solid points; sometimes the hollow point hangs up..
try Stingers, sometimes the action needs a slightly snappier recoil to work effectively.
Your choice of CCI Mini-mags was a good one, Winchester rounds are good. Many folks swear by Win power points.

  Keep us posted.

Winchester Power Points are probably not a good choice for the model 60. It is finicky about that blocky bullet shape, and will probably FTF (fail to feed) those big hollowpoints. Just my experience with the slick little semi.

CCI bullets

Hey,
I tried the CCI bullets.
The only jammed once while using the Standard Velocity.
It never jammed on the Mini Mags.
I'm going to try the Winchester.  Just to see the difference.
Thanks for the help

update to jamming problem

Hey,

I picked up some Winchester Standard velocity bullets, and they jam too.
But not when I use the CCI mini mags.
Next I'll be trying the Remington Thunderbolts and a box of Winchester Wildcats.

that is all,

Your jamming is beginning to sound more like a bolt spring being too stiff for the standard velocity loadings.

I have a S&W Model 41 22 and it will jam with Remington 22s all of the time.  Winchester target loads work just great.

Still Jams!

I tried Winchester Wildcats and Remingtion Thunderbolts.  The rifle still jams with both bullets. So it looks like I'm going to be using CCI Mini Mags.

The Remingtons are JUNK! Not only did they Jam, but every ten or so would misfire. Now I have 500 rounds of crap I don't want!  :x  :x  :x

The spring being to stiff is a good thing, right?
Maybe the rifle, even though its 25+ years old, was never really used that much.

I bought a polishing wheel for my grinder.  So I'm going to see if polishing some of the rifle parts will helps.

ive had nothing but good experience in model 60 with rem 40 solids..but not with hollowpoints..golden bullet loads..viper i think..just sucked..and mini mags just didnt seem very accurate at all..thunderbolts are just a rem. promotional packaging..same round as standard high velocity 40 gr solid loads..same way rem. game loads and viper are just regular 36 gr hp in different box. every gun is a lil different as i had a model 25??..dont remember the model  # exactly but was basicly a 60 clip fed instead of tube..it worked best with mini mags..and hated rem. ammo. Just gotta match your bullets to your gun and feed em what they like

I've have three model 60's.  All of them perform well with Winchester Dynapoint and T-22.  They are most accurate with Wolf Match Extra ($$$). They don't feed blunt nose Win XPert.

is the loaded bullet not chambering?  Or is it a stovepipe where you look straight into an empty case.  Stovepipes are most often caused by too little energy to cycle.  You could lighten the bolt, the bolt spring, or possibly the hammerspring, depending it could cause too light a strike to fire the round.

Remmington does not work in my Ruger handgun either. Try the
Federal copper HP. Several hundred thru my Model 60 SB w/ no
problems at all.   :?

Wow, I never realized how finicky semis are. My Marlin 881 shoots everything well, especially the CCI Mini Mag Solid Points, great on Squirrels and small game, nice clean hole since it isn`t a hollow point. The Rem thunderbolt solids also shoot very well, but not being plated, they almost take a squirrels clean off!! I always wanted a model 60, but we can`t use them to hunt here in PA, it`s illegal :( Jack.

I live in Pa as well. Haven't hunted in about 25 years, last I knew it
was OK for a semi for big game but not for small game even if it was loaded for a smaller capacity.
Never really thought about it but that would mean you coudnt use a
60 for crows or groundhogs ?  What a same if thats true. Back to Remington bullets, the ones I used had a great deal of wax on them
which I believe was enough to screw up my Ruger's cycling te next
round.   :-)

I too have noticed the Rem Thunderbolts are waxy, but since mine is a bolt, no problems. No Semis for Deer either, only shotguns for small game and waterfowl. Heck, in certain management areas, you can use a .22 for small game and chucks, but not for Turkeys, makes no sence. The PA Game Commision has some crazy rules that makes no sence. I myself, I am waiting for the day I can use a Crossbow for Deer. Jack.
