Author Topic: Should I sell my .222 to get a .204?? (Read 1792 times)

Have a Remington .222 Classic and a 22-250 BDL. Was thinking real
hard on selling it to get a .204 CZ 527. Have made a few blunders in the
past by selling to get something new. Will I gain much with a 204 for groundhogs, foxes and coyote's?? Just bought some Horandy 40 and 50
grain VMAX bullets to try tonight in both, this is my first go round with
VMAX bullets, anybody have any comments they would be greatly welcomed. Most shots would be about 250 yds max.

My opinion is that you would be making a mistake selling one or the other for a .204, you won't gain anything in performance. The .222 is fine up your 250 yard max, the .22-250 will take over for longer ranges. The CZ is a great gun, I love mine. It's a .223. You couldn't give me one in .204 if I could not trade it immediately.

That's a tough one!

By all means, keep the 22-250 BDL!!

My Tactical 20 is practically a twin sister to the .204 Ruger. At 4000fps+,
why argue about a couple hundred feet per second? I wouldn't trade it
for a .222, but you do have a second rifle which may very well out-perform
the .204 for coyotes at longer ranges.

The .204 may very well out-perform the .222 out to 250yds (and beyond),
but you do have a Classic!!

Glad it's you, and not me, making that decision! (Not much help, huh?)

I think the .204 might be a fine choice for guy who wants a new varmint rifle, and hasn't got one, or can't make the one he has shoot well. But for guys like me, and probably both of you, it is not worth trading up (down?)to.

I wouldn't mind putting in a bid on that Classic .222 myself.

If you're the sort of guy that trades in his 2004 truck to buy a 2005 model because the dash lights are set up different, then you need to go for it.

Hi Coalminer, save your money and get the .204 but I wouldn't sell the 22-250 or .222. I have a friend that has a .222 rem. rifle and has over 5000 rounds through it shooting woodchucks and I seen him shoot them farther than 250yds. After you use all three calibers and want to sell one my guess it would be the .204.

Don't have to have the newest of everything, it is just that money is a
little tight and it is winter and the money tree is still bare. I was not to
sure if this .204 thing is a step up for me vs the .222. I kinda like that
gun, but have lived by the "Funtion over fashion motto" I like and have
a great deal of respect from the guys on this site, have been away from the shootin world for a while and that is why I have this question.

I don't believe all the data is in on the .204 Ruger yet. If a hunter was in the market for a varmint rifle and didn't already have one then I would say go for it. But I don't see what you are going to gain with the .204 over the .222. The .222 has a better selection of bullets and a more load information. Personally I feel you have the field pretty well covered with what you already have. Lawdog

There is nothing mystical happening at 4000fps that does not happen at 3850fps. The little 17 Rem can easily reach 4100 fps but I have never been able to tell the difference between 3850 fps and 4000 fps and have never even tried to reach 4100fps. I would not expect anythng out of a 204 that the 22-250 doesn't deliver, except more pain and misery in cleaning that smaller bore.

There is a health condition in the firearms world known as "seller's remorse." I am not a doctor nor have I ever had this condition but I know of several friends and family members who were hit hard by it. Please, do not ever sell your .222 just to get a new .204. If you need to sell it to help feed your family, then by all means do so.

My father has had a Rem .222 since the 1950's and he absolutely cherishs the fact that he was able to hold onto that rifle for all these years. It has probably not had three boxes of ammo run through it. He has a lot of firearms but this one holds a special place for him.

The .204 has the edge on all of the other factory rounds on the market. So should you sell one of your guna and get a .204?

? Heck no!!!! Not if you have good shooting guns now. Just go buy a .204 and keep what you have now. I have a .204 and love it. I also have 3 - different .17 cal. cenetrfire rounds I shoot, 5 different .22 cal rounds and 2 - .25 rounds in varmint rifles. 5 of these guns are wildcat and maybe 2 of them I will sell, but you can never have to many guns, :roll: just not enough room to put them. :lol:

I wouldn't sell it either, but I like the 204 a lot better. most of you guys underestimate the little round. if you want the 204, buy it, but dont sell the 222.

Don't sell either. I live with sellers remorse every day due to several that I let get away. As far as those v-max bullets, in my cz 527 American .222, I am loading the 50 gr with 24 gr of varget for about 3000 fps & three rounds into .25 from a cold barrel. It wanders a bit after the barrel heats up (pencil thin) but I can still keep 5 rounds in .75-1.0" range. The 50 grain seems to do better in the wind than the 40 and I routinly make 300 yd shots on whistle pigs and jack rabbits. My 14 year old son loves this rifle so much that I either have to locate another one or place an order for a custom shop contender barrel. The .204 seems very popular here in Idaho but ammo/brass availability is the main problem.

I like my 204 way better than my 22-250 I had.
Triple duce is a fine cal. I wouldn’t sell/trade it for a 204.
The 250 if a fine cal I wouldn’t sell/trade it for a 204.

Guess what I'm saying is I've only sold/traded 6 guns in my life.
I believe in buy buy and buy some more.
If the $$ is tight wait there is no rush to get a 204 and like stated above right now there is a shortage of brass/bullets.
So the wait won't hurt a thing.

Once you get the 204 and you site down a Pdog town you have 3 rifles to cycle threw so no one rifle gets to hot.

Never sell a gun unless it throws funny or you accidentally shot someone with it! But don't give up on the .204 either. Just wait until you have enough cash to buy it. The 204 is much flatter and a bit faster the either of your guns but I think you can get by for a while on what you have. And ballistics do not lie, the 204 is an awesome little round which you will see many, many more factoryloads in the future for it. As well as recipies.

I have a 22-250 and thought about getting the 204, but I could not see the real advantage in the 204 over the 22-250. Stick to the guns you have and don't sell them.

The advantage of th 204 over the 22-250 is similar tragectory burning 10 - 12 grains less powder, besides for barrel life the other advantage is that you are suppost to see the hits though the scope (I have yet to confirm this but all I am waiting for now is the weather) not to mention cheaper to run.

Ammo availabiliy is still a huge problem (at least where I am). IMHO There seems to be two things the gun industry does to shoot themselfs in the foot :roll: when it comes to new releases 1. Put a new round into a rifle that is not suied for the applications the round would be suited to. 2. Not havng enough ammo available to properly build up momentum.

aulrich, I agree with Redhawk1, on this. No real advantage. I dont have any problem seeing hits with my .22-250, but its a heavy gun. That's one reason I wanted the .223 CZ.
Like me, Coalminer7 has the varmint spectrum pretty well covered. The .204 looks like a great little round, but it does not offer anything to a guy who already has a long range varminter.
P.S. Hey guys, the whole idea behind marketing new calibers is to convince you that the ones you have are junk compared to the newfangled ones. Don't fall for it.
