On top of old Smokey

:D Happy to be with you all.  New to the forum as of today.  Have one queston for now.  I just got a .223 Handi and while shooting Wolf ammo it will occasionally fail to eject.  My son noted that the burnt powder will blow back to the rear, and carbon up (we think) and also come out the crack between the barrel and receiver, as noted by the residue on the scope.  Anyone else expierencing this problem? Once again I'm really happy to join up.  I've been watching and using your hints for about two week now while I worked on hitting the target with the .223  So far a couple of four inch clay pigeon at 100 yds. and three jackrabbits have met their fate.  Having a heck of a time.

Is it locking up tight?  In other words does the barrel wiggle after closing?  If it does send it back to NEF/H&R for repair.  If it's tight try another brand of ammo.

If the Wolf ammo is steel cased, it could be that the casing is not expanding enough to seal against the chamber.  The residue would build up and cause the sticking.

I have about 175 rounds through my Handi 223 without any failure to eject.  This is using brass cases (mostly Lake City brass in remanufactured ammo)

Be sure to clean the chamber and the ejector thoroughly.

I agree with naedlaen, get rid of thet Wolf ammo, if it is the lacquered steel cased stuff that very well could be the problem, If it is, clean the chamber and try some Winchester Value Pack ammo (45 grain HP's) out of it and check if the problem still exists. If it still occurs call H&R with your serial number and send it back to them.
Questions for you, When the barrel is in the closed and locked position is there any play in any way? When the barrel is in the closed and locked position is there any space between the back of the chamber and the breech face? If so how much? can you measure it with feeler gauges or fit a piece of typing paper in the opening?....<><....

Wow!  Sooooooooo many hints. The barrel locks up tight.  There is no gap between the barrel and receiver.  The Wolf Ammo IS steel cased and it looks like a laquer finish.  I think I'll try the easiest first and go to Wally World for some WW soft points.  I'll keep ya posted. THANKS

Just a heads up on the Winchester Value pack ammo. It comes on 55 grain solids and 45 grain Hollow Point. Get the 45 grain HP's, that is waht most here have the best luck with for accuracy. As a matter of fact that ammo is the "gold standard" for accuracy in most H&R's...It costs about $14.00 for 40 rounds, save your brass but throw those steel cased empties in the trash. Keep us advised on how things go....<><....

And by the way, how did I miss it...???...!!!

:D , Welcome aboard I B Papa!!, glad to have you here, it's a great place to visit and to learn, as well as help others. Come often and stay late, when your here, your among friends....<><....

Welcome! Just don't expect the .223 to be the only one. Once you start, you can't stop. Lots of good advice here.

Winchester White box 45 grainers shoots the best in my 223 barrel...but to add to the mix here...Wolf 62 grain shoots pretty good in mine too!! Most guys say the Handi shoots best with 55 grain or less because of the twist rate....I actually tried some fancy match 75 grain one time couldn't see where it was hitting at 100 yards...it keyholed on the target at 25 yards!!  :)  Wolf has gone from a laqour to a polimer coating on their steel cased ammo...yes..its dirty nasty powder they use in their ammo...your going to clean your weapons anyway when your thru right? I've shot a pile of it in 9 mm and 223 in full auto guns...never even one hickup...but makes no difference in the handi....if it sticks it sticks... stay away from it...polish your chamber too...always helps...alot!  Welcome to the forum! :D
