I am a big fan of W296.  :D  I have burned several pounds in my 500 MAG.

For the .45 ACP, Bullseye -- I buy it by the 8-lb keg.

For the .45 Colt in my New Service, H4227.  I have a nice 1000 fps load that maximizes what the gun can do without straining it.

For the .45 Colt in my Ruger Blackhawk (for serious hunting), Hogdon's Li'l Gun.

For sheer velocity it is hard to beat VV-N110.  Their 3n37 is also a good magnum powder.  N110 is really a small case rifle powder that will work fine in 44 magnum.

W296 and H110 should count as the same vote, they are the same powder.

I use way more Red Dot than any other powder.
I use it in my plinker 44mag loads.

H110 is my powder of choice for 44 mag's, 45 Colt's and 454 Casull. I have tried others but for my top loads I keep coming back to H110.

Different powder LOTS explain the difference in velocity between H110 and WW296.
One lot of H110 may be faster than one lot of WW296 & vice versa.
In my area, H110 is about $2/lb cheaper than WW296.
For big bores, one needs only ONE powder, and that IS H110 !
For those that want less velocity, recoil, and muzzle blast than H110 provides in magnum cartridges:
Use a non-magnum PIP-SQUEAK cartridge.
I think the weakest worthwhile handgun cartridge for ANYTHING is the .45ACP in +P or HOTTER format.
Usually I choose something HOTTER such as the full-power 10mm or a HOT 357 mag for defensive purposes.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !
