whats better for longe range geese?
« on: March 07, 2005, 07:44:02 AM »
the way i hunt most is driftin' down a small marsh creek and sneakin' up the ducks and geese. i can always get within' 50 yds but closin; that 50yd to 30 yds is a hard thing to do! the gun i hunt with is a H&R 12 .ga w/ a 3" chamber and mod. choke. this year i whant to get a 3 1/2" barrel just because it has a screw in choke. the shot are almost always at a sittin' duck so the single shot is not a problem, i have used steel shot, 3" #2 the last few years and i don't shoot at a duck past 30 yds. the shot i wan't to use is hevi-shot($$$$$ ) but i don't think a 3 1/2" shell is any better than a 3"- i mean, is the differance in 1 1/2oz and 1 5/8 oz really the differance in a dead goose or duck, and one that flies awaay? also can hevi-shot be shot through a full choke tube? i see that cabelas is is making tubes for hevi-shot as tiht as ex-full turkey choke.????????
thanks for any info!!!!!!
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

First of all, good job for taking smart shots.  You know your limits and that is the most important thing.

Drift hunting is a fun way to hunt it is just hard to get real close.

The 3.5" barrel is a good idea ,but they sure give a good kick on the H&R's.  I am a firm believer in using maximum loads.  Most people think this is nuts, but I like the extra punch of a bigger shell.  Heck, I waterfowl hunt mostly with a 10 gauge and rarely lose cripples.

I would not suggest using Hevi through a full choke.  I have read that it can cause barrel damage.  I would suggest spending a little $$ and buying a box of Hevi to try out.  It may make a believer out of you, it did me.

One suggestion I have is try sneaking up from the land instead of the water, it might help.

Sorry, I am not much help on this one.

Good luck.
