Ruger MK II jams

My Ruger Mark II  (gov modle ss with slab sides) jams while extracting...I end up with a new cartridge and the spent crossed and stuck.

The gun has about 300 rounds thru it and this started at about 200.  Any help out there?  

I will be getting the Volquartzen accurizing kit, perhaps I should look at a new extracter hook.   Could this simply be ammo?

Hmmm....jamming after a couple of hundered rounds.  It could be ammo, but if I was you, I would take the gun back...post haste.  It's probably something simple, but why not take the time to have someone look at it before you get too far down the road.  That pistol should eat most anything you can feed it.  I wouldn't do anything to the gun before it was fixed to your satisfaction.

I ran a few thousand of rounds through my Govt. Model, before I ran into my first feeding problem.  Once I thoroughly cleaned the gun and switched to standard velocity target cartidges, the jamming disappeared.  If my memory serves me correctly, the gun accumulated a lot of trash shooting hollow-point "picnic shells", that I bought in bulk, from Mr. Sam.

Let us know what you find out.

Sounds like an ammo problem. Some ammo, even though it's labeled as high velocity, doesn't have enough power to cycle the bolt reliably all the time. Try different ammo and keep shooting it. Or maybe it's just not been shot enough yet. I've got a Mk. II with the 5.5" bull barrel (MK512) that I've had since 1994 and a Govt. Comp. like yours that I got this past August and both took some breaking in. Less than 500 rounds for sure. If it doesn't improve with other ammo and/or more breaking in then I'd send it back to Ruger.

:D What ammo are you using?  I bet you have a lead bullet with lube you can probably peel off with your finger nail.  I would bet you have a lube buildup in the chamber and it is causing the brass to stick on firing.  Clean the gun and see what happens.  I have a 10" barrel mark II that has never jammed.  Shot lots of rounds thru it.  Try shooting the copper clad bullets and see what happens.

Its the ammo...

Yep, the above posts are correct. The problem you are experiencing is due to the ammo. Clean the gun and try a diffrent brand of ammo. I get the best result with Remington Golden Bullet Bonus Pack, 550 rounds for about $9.95 at WallyMart. I get the absolute WORST result with the Fereral Value Pack, 550 rounds for about $8.95. Jams every other round and it doesn't matter if the gun is clean or not. These Federal rounds also jam in my 10-22. The rounds just don't seem to have the power to cycle the gun(s) correctly.

Its not the gun. Rugers are just about the best made guns you will find on the market for the price, or even for two or three times more!

The problem was due to a trigger shield that I installed.  It was a small SS sheet metal device that fits between frame and receiver of gun and covers trigger mech.  

The shield works very well to keep the trigger spotless, but interferes with the feeding of cartridges as they are feed into the chamber.  Evidently this is a problem for some guns but not all.  

Incidently my Mark II loves walmarts bulk federal ammo, go figure each gun IS different..
