Time to rebarrel??
« on: January 09, 2003, 06:23:17 AM »
I just took apart the 98 I had with the shot out barrel and chosing a caliber or staying with the 8mm was kind of hard. It was between 7.62x39 or 8mm again. I chose 8mm with all the cheap turk ammo around and the barrel only costs $37 from numrich you can't go wrong. Its used in excellent condition(bore) with front and rear sites. I should have it within a few days. This will be a shooter for sure not a collector piece.

I may buy another 98 action just to make one 7.62X39 too.

On 98's sometimes the barrel fits with sights up, sometimes they are not. It is something that can be fixed though. So don't worry about it. Just be thankful for your good fortune.

It all depends on where the tap started in on the reciever and where the die started threading the barrel.  This one was 180 degrees off. Yes i do feel very lucky it went good. But not rushing into another one for a while. But I may order another barrel just to have an extra one this one may get shot out(well in a few years) just kidding.                                           BigBill

You know Bill, after reviewing your post you might not be kidding. A friend had a NM M-1 that he rebarreled 3 times because accuracy starts falling off after about 9000 rd.s of -06. He is a heck of a rifle shot.
