I have a High Standard 22 mag. double barrel. My question is can I shoot regular 22 caliber ammo in it?

No! Generally you can shoot 22 short, 22 long and 22 Long rifle in the same gun but not in a 22 mag. Also, the 22s have a small diameter bullet than the 22 mag.

Additionally the lr case is slightly smaller in diamiter and can/will split on fireing. NOT a good idea.

I assume you are talking about a .22 Mad Derringer. I have one myself and I have shot LR's in mine. I'd say it not a good idea as the times I have done it the cases will swell and sometimes split.
