Don't know much about rifles, but I am learning from all you guys and the posts.  I heard today of this round.  What the heck would you need a bullet that powerful for?

That powerful? Shucks that's almost the lightest bullet you can load for 45/70.The 300 is the lowest and you can go all the way up to 500 gr.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

The 350gr is just a starting weight a step above the 300gr lightweight! You can get up to 540gr loads in Garrett ammo and just about anything in between from them, Buffalo Bore and a couple other factory loads. Even Remington loads a 405gr bullet, albeit it at lower velocities than Garrett or BB loads. One good reason I can think of for the 350gr PMC load is it shoots much flatter than some of the heavier but slower loads. Sighted in 3" high at 100yds, the 350gr sierra in the PMC ammo hits 5" low at 200yrds.

Yeah, my lightweight utility round is a swaged 375 grainer with a spirepoint and boattail made by Buffalo Bullet for use with sabots in muzzle loaders. The bullet is pure lead and I paper patch them. Well, I have recently started playing around loading them. It will be interesting to see what they do. Now, a  450 grain Lyman "volunteer" bullet patched on the base and seated way out lets me treat it like a 45-90, well, almost. I load them heavier in the #3 but that rifle is too light for it, I am much happier with loads that both rifles like. The 350 grain is nothing exotic even if it is 7/3 what you might shoot in a 30 cal. (if you are shooting 150 grainers). If you compare that to how much bigger .45 really is next to .30 you would see that the two are rather comparable; and 150 is no heavy weight in a .30.

There's no replacement for displacement! The little round on the left is a 45-70 next to the 45-120s on the right....

That 350 gr handloaded has become my favorite whitetail load, in both my Marlin and Handi. mt

Thanks for all the input!  I guess I really do need to bone up on a few things before I post about some things in the future.  Maybe I heard the guy wrong because he was talking about how hard the new load he was speaking about would kick.  However, if was better educated on this subject I would have known I didn't hear it right.
Please be patience with me, I will get there.  I really do need to get hold of the Lymans book and do some reading.

Well, he was right, the heavy loads do kick when pushed faster....the 350gr Hornady RN pushed with 28gr of 2400 is a real accurate load in a handi, doesn't have a lot of recoil at aboout 1500fps, but the same bullet pushed to 2000fps is gonna let ya know that ya pulled the trigger, for sure. But, a Limbsaver recoil pad and some weight in the stock goes a long ways to reduce that felt recoil.

That is so true...and don't forget to add some type of soft cheek peice to the stock as well...this makes it much more enjoyable to shoot ...you can go all out and buy one already made...or you can do what I do and add a Uncle Mikes shell holder to the stock...and put some soft foam rubber under it...

.45-70 350-grain cast
« Reply #12 on: March 03, 2005, 01:30:18 PM »
Does anvbody load a 350-grain cast bullet with XMP-5744? I was thinking of loading some with about 30 grains of powder. Any opinions on that load?

I'm loading 41 to 43 grains of 5744 and 405gr Rems or CP WLNGC in my 45-120...no problems. Load data for 5744 can be found at the link below...
